So help me god if the Leafs sign Stamkos to an AAV of 13M. I really would hope that they're smarter than that. Whether there is a legitimate health risk involved in signing him or not, I hope for whichever teams sake that signs him that he comes at a price under what CHI dished out for their golden boys. I know its an exaggeration, but with the league constantly improving as a whole I really think the one timer from the left circle is becoming less and less of the cash cow that it once was. Don't tell Ovechkin that. Like I said, I know its an exaggeration to say that would SEVERLY limit Stamkos in the league, and I think he still does have the potential to score 50 goals, however with the cap where it is, and the position the leafs will be in 2-3 years down the road with expiring ELC's - I think 13M is out of the question

I wouldn't do the first overall for just OEL....as a Leafs fan.
I think a 'potential' number one center is more valuable than a number one D. Obviously that depends on the potential but the odds say Matthews will be a star centerman in the league.
And I find it amusing that whenever a Toronto based player gets linked to the Maple Leafs every gets frustrated and 'enough is enough'. Yet, Matthews hasn't even been drafted and rumours are linking him with Arizona.
Too funny.
NO.WAY.TOR.TRADES.THIS.PICK!
Even if they sign Stamkos (unlikely as their future cap situation would cripple them for a number of years).
The leafs have committed to a plan and I don't see Shanny waivering from that plan. I can't count the number of times I heard him say you build through the draft so why would he trade an elite (not generational) C that is soooo difficult to acquire. In addition, the leafs didn't stockpile 12 picks this year (3 in the first 31 picks) for nothing.
I expect another year of pain, a high draft pick again in 2017, then they will be set for the future.

So who is this 26-year old Chayka going to make deals with in the NHL?
It's not like there are any other < 30-year old GM types around the league that are as into analytics as him?
Right?

Oh I’m not saying it’s a fair trade. But if Yotes want Matthews they will have to overpay and by a lot.
OEL + 7th, and maybe like a 2/3 round pick next yr for 1st overall is “fair” to the point where Toronto isn’t in any need to trade the pick, so they’ll take it. But adding Domi makes it a trade where Toronto can’t/won’t say no to.
Toronto isn’t selling, Yotes are buying. Thus sellers’ market.

Those were my thoughts as well in the other thread.

Mind you he can call Kyle Dubas who was reportedly offered the job in Arizona but turned it down. At least Dubas has experience running an OHL team.
Like I said before, Tippett is going to have a larger role in decisions than we may realize, especially with his new 5 year deal tucked in his back pocket. BTW was it new GM Chayka that signed Tippett to his new deal?
True #1 C are hard to come by and a team doesn't/shouldn't get the first overall pick often so I just don't see TO trading the pick unless like 2014OG says, there's a gross overpayment.
OEL is 6 years older, Matthews 18. The Stamkos theory doesn't make sense unless you are guaranteed to get Stamkos, but how does that happen since the draft is in June and Stamkos isn't a free agent until July 1. Even if you trade for the right to negotiate with Stamkos before July 1 there is still no guarantee he would sign.
