Just kidding, who the hell would do that.. But seriously. If you were given a budget of $100, and asked to allot your money to four separate closed auctions. Each auction would be but your positioning in four separate drafts limited to the following categories respectively: veteran forwards; veteran defensemen, veteran goalies, and prospects. For purposes of the thread, let's say anyone who's accrued less than 83 NHL games played is considered a prospect (yes, including mcdavid). How do you allot your funds, and what type of player do you realistically hope to be able to select with that bid? (I.e. Prospects - $100, McDavid; or 25/25/25/25, Hall, Byfuglien, Rask, Nylander)

    I would probably go:

    97 - vet forward
    1 - vet D
    1 - vet G
    1 - prospect

Chances are most people are going to either go 25/25/25/25 or all in with 100 in one of them.

By putting 1 into 3 of the 4 options, you put yourself ahead of all of the 0 people in those categories, while still ensuring yourself a pretty damn high pick of the vet forwards. Too many people will be gunning for McDavid and if even if you go heavy in the prospects category you might end up with a junk pick. The vet forward group is way deeper.

This seems solid. Or maybe 94 2 2 2. Either way, yea.

I like this, but I may go for two categories and split it up as:
    Prospect - 1
    Vet D - 1
    Vet G - 26
    Vet F - 72

Gives you a similar high option as Vet F, the 1 at prospect and D, while ensuring you're above all the 25 splits to nab a solid goalie as a backbone for your team.

Some surprising answers actually. This is how I'll be setting up an inaugural draft in the fall. My thoughts were that since there is so much less drop off in the top 12 forwards than there are at any other position, that picking late in the forwards round would be more acceptable. Personally, I want Karlsson, becauause the most drop off is in his category, but I can see your thinking in that the rest of the teams might have the same approach, and a half-in bid of 75 might only score you the 3rd or 4th pick in that category, while also limiting you in the other three.

I think the stud defenceman and prospect available are that much better than the stud forwards and goalies in terms of fantasy value. (catch, the person who picks first in the prospect round will pick last in the next, 4th round, of veteran drafting overall)
