The Hawks drafting has been terrible so trading a pick isn’t going to hurt them. Since 2008 (not including this yr):
    68 players draft
    Amassed 1359GP, 225G, 273A, 498Pts, 505PIM
3 players have played over 200games for the Hawks (Kruger, Saad, Shaw)
2 have more than 100pts (Saad, Shaw)
    In their last 8 first round picks (11th – 2008, 28th – 2009, 24th – 2010, 18th – 2011, 26th – 2011, 18th – 2012, 30th – 2013, 20th – 2014), they have a combined 239GP (116 from D.Olsen), and a total of 75pts (45 from Hayes).

Giving up another 1st round pick and a prospect may not be a huge issue for the team that somehow finds a way to get youth/talent outside of drafting.

If I were the Hawks, I would look for an improvement at C over the wings....that is if Hossa is back for the playoffs.

Toews' LW has been a tire fire all season. Adding Boedker would shift, Shaw down to L3 (where he would play center and be more effective), getting Hossa back would shift Panik back down to L3, and you'd be rolling

    Boedker-Toews-Hossa
    Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
    Teravainen-Shaw-Panik
    who cares about L4

So really, acquiring Boedker WOULD upgrade their L3 C position. With the chemistry Panarin-Anisimov-Kane have, there's no reason to try and upgrade your L2 C spot. That line works perfect.

I wasn't referring to upgrading L2C, but L3C...if you could make the cap dollars work by bringing in someone like Staal and shipping out Bickell (more obviously to be included), and have Staal roll into your L3C, a great possession player, and trot out Toews-Anisimov-Staal as your pivots on your top 3 lines, that could be a very dangerous combo.

If you're acquiring Staal (either one), you're still more likely to play him at L1LW than L3C. Shaw is a perfectly fine L3C, you're wasting assets to bring in someone like Staal to play him on your third line.

I dunno, I think the “skilled” forward on that line is always a waste. Ladd, Kunitz, Uncle Leo type of player is who I’d want. Straight line, hits, competent defensively, and a shot to stop making goalies cheat on a pass. The speed of that line doesn’t go well with a faster player. I don’t watch too many Hawks games, but I think that often on the high end defensive lines in the league. Nothing Flashy, just simple hockey works well with the Toews/Hossa players.

ya I see what you're saying (if thats possible) but the thought of Boedker moving on from ARZ to a team like CHI with premiere line mates..sure makes me tingle. I don't think of Boedker as flashy by any means either..he just looks that way at the moment.

If Shaw is fine as a centre, then they probably have the luxury of being able to pick and choose between LW and C as far as their rental goes and thus may get away with not giving up as great of an asset.

The Hawks have their best center depth that they have had for years with Toews, Ansimov, TT, and Kruger. Plus, Danault is a natural center but has been playing wing.

Shaw is serviceable as a center but he is an elite 4th line grinding wing which is where he is ideally placed. Last year's Cup run saw a 4th line of Kruger, DesJardins, and Shaw which was excellent.

Overall, the Hawks have 2 holes right now- 1LW and a 3rd line winger and I don't think they have enough cap space for both. Ideally they would run lines such as:
    Toews, Hossa, Rental
    Anisimove, Kane, Panarin
    TT, Danault, Rental
    Kruger, Shaw, Desjardins

They probably won't get the 3rd line winger so they'll slot Shaw there and play Panik on the 4th line.

I think they need to direct their attention to a 4/5/6D over a bottom 6 rental. TVR as your 4th isn’t ideal, especially in a long playoff run when your 5/6D is a 37yr old. Their experiments with Daley and Scuderi have absolutely flopped.

The problem is that the price is so high for a top 4 dman that most people aren't really considering it. Yes, I would love an upgrade to pair with Seabrook instead of TVR and I suspect Bowman would too but that would be very expensive. The #1 priority is a line 1 LW. If they could get a top 4 dman that would be my second choice but I don't think that is realistic cap-wise and asset-wise which is why I stated that they could get a line 3 winger. I am actually ok with their D. While they have never replaced Oduya, they have more depth than last year.
