Ahhh!!!! I clicked submit and submitted the wrong answer! I want to edit my vote for (b)!!
I think most people will say (d), some will say (a) and some will say (b).
Curious what the Dobber Community thinks on this one. Last night after Jordan Eberle had his first ever NHL hat trick I got in a somewhat heated argument over the term "natural hat trick" and what it means. Please vote without googling interested more so in "common knowledge" than in what the dictionary has to say.
Is a "natural hat trick"
a) 3 goals scored by one player;
b) 3 goals scored by one player in a row with no goals scored by either team in between;
c) 3 goals scored by one player in a period; or
d) 3 goals scored by one player all on a goaltender (no empty netters allowed).
If something else all together feel free to add.
I'll post my pick and arguments later.
Also for the grammar people is it "hattrick" "hat-trick" or "hat trick" ??

Natural hat trick is 3 goals scored by a player at 5 on 5.
No PP, no SHG, no empty net, no penatly shots.
To clarify, by 5 on 5, I should say even strength.

I was always lead to believe it was in the same period (c). However, ive also heard referenced to 3 in a row for YOUR TEAM, regardless of how many the other team score between...

I didn't think PP or PK mattered. 3 consecutive goals.
Wikipedia agrees lol
hmm I guess I'm wrong, but what makes it "natural" then?
Wouldn't 3 consecutive just be an "unanswered" hat trick or something like that?

I always thought a 'Natural Hat Trick' was three goals without any PP, SH, EN goals.
I read or was told somewhere that it is actually three uninterrupted goals in a single period.
In short. I'm confused.
I thought it was 3 goals on 3 consecutive shots. There is no basis for that assumption.
Well now I'm curious. Has that EVER been accomplished?
Best I've found is Bill Mosienko who scored 3 goals in 21 seconds all at even strength. There must be a decent chance that no other shots were taken.
Next closest is Beliveau with 44 seconds, but all on 2-man advantages.
a natural hat-trick is 3 goals scored without anyone else scoring in-between. EV/SH/PP/EN doesn't matter, number of shots doesn't matter, number of periods doesn't matter (as long as it's the same game).
I've always understood it to be (b) three goals in a row by a given individual. I've never heard of any caveats regarding even-strength, power-play, empty net, etc.
