[Trade] Phaneuf to Ottawa in monster deal

I'm wondering if Toronto is one of those teams like the New York Yankees that certain players just don't perform well in, because of the media scrutiny or whatever.

I suppose it's possible that he may have a partial revitalization in Ottawa. If it happens this would be a decent deal for Ottawa.

I guess Toronto get's out of his salary quicker this way, but I tend to agree this deal looks better for Ottawa now but they may be ruing the day a couple of years from now.

The Sens homerism is real on this thread but...

Even though hes overpiad- Ott can basically afford it for now and Phaneuf slides into pretty much an ideal spot. Ive maintained from day one Phaneuf would be fine as a 2/3 guy with less media focus. He basically got the best version of that in this trade imho. I wouldnt call it a great trade for the Sens but they filled a hole for peanuts (asset wise). Murray is pretty good at magaing his cap. Its actually an "ok" trade for them today- see how long term unfolds.

As a TO fan Phaneuf was a bigtime "whipping boy". We definitely dont get better by moving him- thats horseradish. The assets were whatever. Its a full commit to the re-build- I can live with that...

I expected a little more of a hockey trade when Dion eventually got dealt. But looks to me like 2 teams unloading contracts they no longer wanted.
I guess that's a win-win trade for both teams.
Definitely more risk for Ottawa, no guarantee this makes them a playoff team...and Dion has never been known for his speed. As he ages that speed is only getting worse. I cant see Dion maintaining this level of play into his mid-30's.

That's because the contract in question is the elephant in the room. It's the reason he's been traded for a package of less valuable assets. You can't evaluate the trade without considering the contract.

I understand that and you're right about the return but, Ottawa gets a player that they need and will use while the Leafs get fillers. As far as the trade on the ice goes, Ottawa wins hands down, and as far as I remember, the game is played on the ice. That's all the players and the fans care about and what history will remember. If there is anything to remember.

I'm not a Sens fan and I think it's a pretty good trade for the Senators. I don't think they gave up anything of considerable value and I think Phaneuf really adds a lot to their d and brings a style of play that they needed.

I agree, actually. I never thought Phaneuf was "as bad" as his contract and the spotlight in Toronto deemed him to be. The Sens are Erik Karlsson's team - Dion can just supply solid play on the 2nd pairing with the skills to level up if needed. I think Ottawa is a nice fit for Phaneuf actually. His tag isn't great, but I don't think the Sens plan on spending to the max cap anytime soon, so that's a moot point for now. Bottom line is - the Senators are a better hockey team today than they were yesterday IMO.

That said, I think this trade is solid for the Leafs too - works perfectly with their plan. Nothing wrong with a win-win trade.

Maybe the Sens picked up Phaneuf to humiliate the Leafs. They stole their captain for a ragtag group of players, next they'll throw him on a back line or down to the farm. Priceless!
