It is very easy to understand from Ottawa perspective. The Sens cleared two contracts that were deadweight (Cowen and Greening) and they got a top 4 D they desperately needed. They were spending the same amount of money for two players that were never in the NHL lineup, so now they're spending it instead on the second best D man on the roster. They really needed a veteran D to play with Cody Ceci.

Stajan is still there, and about the value of a second round pick. Third round pick maybe? It was never good lol, but the only thing Toronto got out of this was a salary dump. So it's basically the same trade.

Dion won't play with Karlsson. He's going to be Ceci's partner. He's a great fit for the second pairing and they will get easier minutes. Phaneuf will have less pressure which I think is something everyone has agreed he would excel with.

as for a post above I don't know why the Leafs would try to flip Michalek. He's a good 200 ft veteran who can really help them.
