I said I wanted phaneuf before he was even mentioned to be going to Ottawa. I have always been a fan. The moronic Toronto fans and media put way too much pressure on him and expected him to be somebody he isn't. He isnt a superstar he's just a solid d.

I seem to remember that Phaneuf was a bit more than just a "solid d" when he was in Calgary. Which sort of supports my theory that Toronto may be a corrosive environment, especially for players who invite expectations.

True, but some like Phaneuf REALLY aren't worth what they are getting paid. I don't think Phaneuf is a bad defeneseman but he is overpaid for what he offers now. If he was signed long term to a $5M annual cap hit then he dosen't look as bad. He is a fair price at $5M but that extra $2M. Phaneuf is currently the fifth highest paid Dman in the league (soon to be the 6th once Big Buffs deal kicks in next season). Yikes!

And yes Ev, cap hit matters. Just wait until Karlssons contract expires in three years, and you need cap space to re-sign him to god-knows-how-much at that point in time. His contract comes up the year after Turris and Stone get re-signed and two years after Zibanejad. You think Stamkos is about to hit it big, Karlssons next deal will be a monster AAAAAAND you will still have two more years of Phaneuf at $7M towards that cap hit. It all counts and it all matters. You will see soon enough.

my point is that if phaneuf's current cap hit was 5M with 5M salary yearly, that would be no different to them if it was a 7M cap hit with 5M salary.

the sens never spend or even come close to the cap. they are usually 7-10M under because Melnyk is cheap as ****.

so even when Karlsson gets his massive raise, they will find ways to cut costs (salary) so they will always be under the cap significantly.
