So the Model X has finally begun trickling off the production line (only 280 delivered as of end of 2015)... early reviews are very impressive.

That’s the one I was talking about. It’s too cool.

I'm definitely buying one at some point. No question in my mind about that. I just have to wait until the kids are a little older and we no longer require a 7-passenger vehicle.

I've read reviews from serious car people that have said this is not the best electric car they have ever driven, but the best car they have ever driven.

The only ones on Autotrader in the GTA (within 250km) are $90,000+. It’ll be a long time before I get to have one.

    Electric vehicle researcher here.

Get the car (assuming you have the money to burn). Greatest car anyone has ever built. Seriously.

I've heard that the resale values on the Model S apparently suck... which is surprising given the 8 year warranty.

    See... I'm conflicted.

I would LOVE to own a Model S, but at the same time I would miss some of the simple 'tinkering with the car' moments of my past.

First car I ever owned was 1984 Hyundai Pony (that was 20yrs old at the time) with a manual transmission and rear wheel drive. My brother and I drove that thing for weeks with a dead starter, just parked facing down hill. Once I had to crawl underneath to physically re-attach the cable for the parking brake... No ABS, no power anything (arguably you could include the 70hp engine in the 'no power'). I dunno, is getting nostalgic about things that ostensibly sucked a sign of getting old?

    Yes.

Enjoy your tinkering old man... I prefer seamless updates downloaded and installed directly to my car by imaginary robots via the intraweb while I sleep peacefully in my warm bed.

I agree with Loch a bit. I would miss the sound of the old fashioned car, no question.

I'll have the last laugh when a sleep deprived Elon Musk accidentally uploads the latest SpaceX update into your car and you end up in low earth orbit...

You'd get over it, and would appreciate the fact you have a modern vehicle that has essentially no moving parts, incredible torque and pull, is silent, has essentially a "full tank of gas" every single morning, requires zero maintenance, and handles like a dream.

Just remember: all that tinkering is because of a ridiculously and unnecessarily complex system that is reminiscent of last century.

Also remember: Electric vehicles will be mainstream in a few decades, so your days of "tinkering" with a vehicle's parts are ending soon regardless.
