Now, now... no superhero likes their mask to be unveiled.
After winning the league championship, it’s time to look back at how the champion Eagles were constructed with several key trades....
Back in the early days of the Eagles, here is how they started the re-build in 2017....
1. Eagles traded Suter to the Road Runners for 2 x first round picks....
2. Eagles traded Yandle to the Monsters for 2 x first round picks (including 7th overall)....
3. Eagles traded Lucic to the Nailers for 2 x firsts....
Then heading into 2018....
4. Eagles trade Tolvanen + second to the Firebirds for 2 x firsts (including 4th overall)....
5. Later that season the Eagle traded down from 2nd overall to 9th overall + a future first from the Cougars....
6. That same year the Eagles also traded Gardiner to the Road Runners for Necas + a first....
7. The Eagle GM also traded Cody Eakin to the Cougars for a second round pick....
Then as we head into 2019 the Eagles pull off a blockbuster...
8. Eagles traded Yamamoto + Saad + first to the Nationals for Stone....
9. Also that season the Eagles traded Ferland + second to the Road Runners for a first + third + Wood....
10. The Eagles then traded 18th overall + Wahlstrom to the Nationals for Kyle Connor....who they then flipped to the Kiss for a first (that turned out pretty good) + Kase....
11. Then into 2020 the Eagles traded Maroon to the Road Runners for Norris....
And with that collection of firsts plus their own, Eagles were able to select the following players....
2017
Yamamoto
Tolvanen
Brannstrom
Oettinger
2018
Svechnikov
Kotkaniemi
Wahlstrom
Quinn Hughes
Hallander
2019
Caulfield
Boldy
Podkolzin
2020
Lafreniere
Lundell
Bourque (who was soon traded for Kessel)....
And that is how you complete a rebuild....

Let us all get to know new GM Mr. Dennis a little better….
What got you into fantasy hockey?
Before I started working as a teen I’d spend all day Sunday watching NFL with my Dad, a classmate invited me into their Fantasy Football league which I enjoyed so I tried out Hockey, baseball, and basketball leagues as well. When I no longer had the entirety of Sunday to watch NFL my interest in football waned but I never stopped watching hockey and just kept playing fantasy.
What made you decide to join the WHL?
I was looking for a league deeper than I had been in before, ideally one that was a good mix of competitive yet casualish. I had seen the WHL talked about on the board before and it sounded promising and the board has quality folks on it. Good folks make for good leagues.
What was your team building strategy for the dispersal draft?
Take it one round at a time until I had a better idea of what the other managers were up to. When they started to focus more on youth and entry draft picks I concentrated on players producing now and re-draft picks.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve discovered about the WHL?
All players must go through the draft! My bread and butter in dynasty leagues has been snapping up undrafted European players (and sometimes NCAA,) last season alone in a salary cap dynasty I had Lehtonen, Zub, Hakanpaa, Barabanov, P. Suter, and Melnichuk. All that has been nipped in the bud in this league.
Who are some NHL players you enjoy watching? Past or present.
Wendel Clark was always my childhood hero. I still pretend I’m him if I get a chance to play road hockey again.
What made you select your team name?
I just want people to remember the awful Canadian ‘90’s TV show ‘Power-Play’ set in a fantasy-land where Hamilton has an NHL team. I also really like the Steelheads name, logo, and colour-scheme, both of which are terribly ugly. If anyone ever finds a Steelheads jersey in a thrift store hit me up.
What is your occupation and how did you get into that?
I’m a machinist. I typically program and run a large CNC boring mill. I was fortunate to have a Machine Shop in my high-school and my Auto teacher knew I had strong math skills and I liked working with my hands so he pushed me towards that which I enjoyed and went from there.
What is one vacation you enjoyed? And what is one vacation you want to go on but haven’t yet?
In my mid-twenties I spent 2 weeks back-packing the Netherlands and Germany by myself. Survived on beer, coffee, and cigarettes, stayed in hostels, went to concerts nearly every night, made it out to Munich for the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest. It was fun.
As for one I haven’t yet I’ll be realistic, with 2 young kids I’m not going back to Europe anytime soon but maybe I can visit Nashville and Memphis in the not to distant future.
What interests do you have outside of fantasy hockey?
A lot of my interests have been put on hold because of the pandemic, softball and dodgeball have both been put on ice. I play bass in a shitty garage band with a few friends and we’re hoping to start getting together again soon. We suck but have fun. Other than that I enjoy listening and playing a lot of music, all sorts, as well as reading novels and comic books when I happen to get some free time.
What is one real world accomplishment (non fantasy hockey) you are proud of?
I still don’t know how I got my wife to agree to a date, much less marry me. I guess my kids should be my answer. I’ll go with that.
You can now ask me one question....
If you were a bot, would you tell me?
Yes, bot I am not.
