Because of the 0 responses to this, I think the general consensus will be it won’t work.

Interesting concept - lots of girls playing hockey in Canada and U.S. Time will tell - need to be marketed as an event.

If the NHL got behind it it would stand a better chance. I really enjoy watching the Women's World Hockey Championship and the Olympics, and the calibre of hockey is extremely entertaining. Not sure if I would follow a league though.

When it's the best vs the best it's fun to watch. I watch curling at the olympics and high level tournys. But i cant stand the "league" play. Sub-par, and non-entertaining. Very curious if womens hockey would dilute the talent to make it way to slow, or make it that high end talent goes for highlight after highlight.

i dont have high expectations especially when you consider a full roster with only $270000 for a salary cap means an average of $14k per player give or take. im all about chasing your dreams....but you still need a livable wage for it to be worth your while.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.

I agree with this. The players will need to have other jobs, either part time during the season or full/part time in the offseason. I would be mostly curious about attendance since so many people do not have disposable income. I really hope it is successful.

18 games = roughly 6 weeks. So the whole thing could be done in 2 months. 14K for 2 months pretty good. If it runs in the summer, a lot of teachers would do this. I don’t know how hard it is to come out of college into teaching in the States, but in Canada it’s almost impossible to become a teacher without volunteering your time for yrs with summer school, and normal school. A 24yr old wouldn’t be able to try and focus on their professional career and play this for 2 months.

I had a gym teacher in high school that was hired on pretty much to teach the HS hockey team. She played for team Canada (can’t remember her name. Very butch tho haha) and she literally had the easiest classes to teach. Gym, and careers (mandatory class that you pretty much surf Workopolis.com and do job placement tests). And she wouldn’t teach careers when the hockey season was on I’m pretty sure. That would be the type of person that would be able to play this IF it was in the summer.

Business owners, trainers, realtors, and part time (retail or food industry) workers are the only type of people that could do this. Or retirees.

I think it will have zero interest in the states. Here, hockey is a niche, regional sport and that is at the NHL level. Except for tennis, no women leagues are very successful. Personally, I would never watch it. Nothing against the female athletes- if they can make it work, good for them.

The NBA props up the WNBA. How many teams make money? If it wasn't for the NBA money that league would have folded years ago.

    That's a low blow...

Women's hockey doesn't deserve to be slandered with a Leafs comparison and I think you should apologize.

I think the article stated that the season would run from October to March, including preseason and playoffs. Games appear to be on weekends so they are stretching out the season.

I cant see it thriving, maybe it'll work for a few seasons, find a niche and settle in. But I cant ever see it becoming bigger then any of the other hockey options available, NHL, AHL, CHL, NCAA/CIS, even minor Midget and Bantam A+ hockey is more entertaining in my opinion. Unless we're talking a USA vs Canada Gold Medal game with all that's at stake and the rivalry to go with it....it just really isn't that good of hockey, in my opinion. They'll be relying on new young girls becoming fans, and current female NHL fans becoming die-hard fans of the Women's league, but from a lot of my experience around female NHL fans, they like hockey, the best hockey available; I'm sure theyll check it out, but still be NHL fans first.

I hope it works, there's so many girls in minor hockey nowadays, it'd be nice if the elite talent had more of an option then NCAA/CIS, then the 1/20 chance of making the national team. Otherwise hockey's pretty much over for them.
