No he won't supplant Varly. Not a chance IMO, Roy will give all of the opportunities to Varly who has the big contract, the better track record, and is, well, probably better.
I picked him up last week after it became apparent that Roy was going to ride him while Varly was out. Today, he turned in a huge performance against the Penguins, including stopping a Crosby breakaway.
Does anyone else think he has a real chance of supplanting Varly? He's looked so good and Varly has been off since the start, not to mention this groin issue. I'm definitely going to hold him but just wondering what everyone else thinks.

I'm not so sure Roy won't give Pickard the chance of supplanting Varly. I remember very well that Roy was at the same position when he arrived in the NHL in 85-86, and stole the number 1 gig. Pickard's style looks a lot the same, not too say that he could be as good, but they both have the same intuitive way of shutting down plays and confronting players.
I'd keep a sharp eye on how this situation devellops.

Another thing I was thinking was that the Avs are falling out of the playoff race very early and they may just ride the guy that gives them the best chance to win, which has been Pickard.
I doubt Pickard will be given the job or many chances to grab it, Varly is the golden boy with the big contract and track record from last year.
However, it does depend on which Varly returns...if he continues to struggle & get injured then the door remains open for Pickard, but if he comes back and puts together some good outings Roy will go with him.
Berra also has multiple years on a contract so Pickard may be back in the AHL rather than the backup.

Absolutely not. Its Varllys crease when healthy.
Pickard is playing well but Avs give him no goal support and he isnt getting W's.
The bigger question is who is sent down to the AHL when Varlamov returns, Berra or Pickard. You would think Pickard to get playing time.Berra has been horrible this season. Same situation in Chicago where Darling outplayed Rannta....yet he was sent down after Crawford returned to the roster.
I traded Pickard 2 days ago in a keeper league for Panthers stud d man
Ekblad.

Oh man... he's been so good! Had such an amazing game against Pittsburgh.
No way Pickard takes over Varly for starting job this year...sorry Pickard owners. Roy LOVES Varly, and he won't be so quick to forget that Varly carried the Avs to the playoffs last year.
