Default Nyquist leaves game with minor injury

    http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nh...ings/16370525/

"The Detroit Red Wings lost on Saturday night.

They lost, 3-1, to the Bruins in a preseason game that doesn't count in the standings.

But in the waning moments of the loss, they lost Gustav Nyquist to an injury.

If Nyquist were to miss significant time, that would affect the Wings in the standings.

But general manager Ken Holland doesn't think that's the case.

"Looks like he's going to be OK," Holland said.

Nyquist left the ice with 44 seconds left with what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

Late this evening, the Wings said, he was still being evaluated by doctors and both the team and Holland said they would have an update on him Sunday.

He was seen on the trainer's table after the game.

Nyquist, 25, broke out last season, tallying 28 goals and 20 assists in 57 games. He was called up in late November and anchored the Wings' offense for the rest of the season as Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk battled injuries."

Staal, B. Bennett, Datsyuk, Stepan, etc., and now Nyquist. I wonder if teams are starting to get nauseous when they start to think about these meaningless games that may cost them big time come the regular season. It isn't like these guys come into camp in terrible shape anymore.

Meaningless, yes.. But rather it happen now, get things worked out, and be ready for the start of the season..

If this was the regular season, maybe Nyquist would have stayed in the game..

Teams are increasingly holding their top players out of preseason games, given that there's little need for the "conditioning" aspect among today's athletes. It's not like these guys need to sweat off the summer beers anymore. It's 2014, and these guys are well-oiled machines. I think we're moving toward a decrease, or dare I say an outright abolishment, of the preseason. Little need for these games.

The owners would strongly disagree with you.

With only 44 seconds left in the game I think we can all forgive him if he did not finish the game, regular season or not.

Not sure it matters whether these guys get hurt in preseason because they could just as easily be getting hurt (and many will) in the first week or two of the regular season. Injury is a big part of this game.

Let's just hope this is just a tweak and they are taking extra precaution with Datsyuk already out.

Any updates today about Nuquist? I have to decide by midnight if I keep him as my 10th keeper over Hiller and Palat.

I'd be leaning towards Palat over Nyquist anyway. That Detroit system sure has a way of limiting young player's upsides until they are older.
