Coyle
Niederreiter
Thought I'd start this thread as it seems like an interesting discussion... In a league that counts G, A, Shots, and Hits (since lots of leagues count those categories), who would you take? It's incredible how similar they are in certain areas.
Age/Height/Weight:
Coyle: Born in 1992, 6'2", 205 lbs
Niederreiter: Born in 1992, 6'2", 209 lbs
Draft Pedigree
Coyle: 2010, 1st round - 28th pick
Niederreiter: 2010, 1st round - 5th pick
Hockey's Future Analysis
Coyle: 8.0 Talent Score, 'C' Probability of Success
Niederreiter: 8.0 Talent Score, 'C' Probability of Success
Stats in 2013-14
Coyle: 30 pts in 70 games, 135 Shots, 108 Hits
Niederreiter: 36 pt in 81 games, 143 Shots, 175 Hits
I really like Coyle, but last season made me think Niederreiter could suprise us this season.
I love Nino. He's my vote.
Coyle for me. Minnesota likes him better and he is a more complete player. Coyle has the last top 6 spot in Minny and more PP opportunity.
El Nino was a surprise last year. The question is who losses ice to Vanek? Coyle plays center (no 2) and El Nino now sits behind Pomminville and Vanek.
Points only pool - H2H - Dress 11/week - 2 at every forward position(RW, LW, C), 4 D, 1G
Goalie Points = 2/win, 1/overtime loss, 3 more/shutout (They typically make up most of the top 10 point getters every year in our league)
24 teams but 2 of every player (2 Crosbys, 2 Rasks, etc.) so treat it like a 12 team.
PROTECT 11 (max. roster size is 25)
LW - Benn, Pacioretty, Henrique, Abdelkader, Pulkkinen
C - Tavares, Backstrom, Johansen
RW - Giroux, Wheeler, Donskoi, Pomminville, Silvferberg
D - Josi, Karlsson, Burns, Seabrook, Reilly, Gardiner,
G - Jones, Rinne, Miller
Coyle played RW all last season. The only time he played Center was when Koivu was injured. Also Vanek is a LW. So Nino and Coyle are both behind Pominville duking it out for the #2 RW spot. But Minnesota likes Coyle more, and Coyle/Koivu have chemistry and played together most of the season last year when Koivu is healthy. I assume lines will start out as
Vanek-Granlund-Pominville
Parise-Koivu-Coyle
with the Koivu line taking all the tough minutes. Parise and Vanek might flop back and forth occasionally as Parise-Granlund-Pominville had great chemistry when they played together last season.

Parise (in a chat with P McG) said Nino is due to bust out very soon and was taken back by his talent level in practices. Nino is a winger in our league and I'd draft him first before Coyle at C (our league). But things could change there I guess.
good discussion.
Nino for me.
Hockey Pools? Too many to mention. Points only, salary cap and dynasty.

Is it ok to quote Dobber's fantasy hockey guide here? Dobber, I hope you won't sue me because I make this available to people who haven't payed for your guide. I'm rather advertising it because I found the thoughts to exactly this topic very convincing (same can be said for many, many more thoughts, of course...):
"There is just one spot on the two scoring lines up for grabs and it's probably going to come down to Niederreiter or Coyle. What Niederreiter has going for him is that he is not as strong defensively as Coyle. So putting him on a checking line may not make as much sense. Last seas on, Niederreiter's points per game average was 0.44 against Coyle's 0.43. Very tight. But Nino did it in 14 minutes per game (Coyle was 17 per game). For that reason, he should
get the nod to play on the Granlund/Vanek line."
Nothing to add, Nino for me (ok, I'm biased because of nationality

I'd go with Nino for the hits, if a fantasy league includes it.
That said, I think Coyle is the better real-NHL-player, based on his two-way play.
I actually think Coyle will get the top six spot, because that is Minnesota's game: to be defensively sound.
I agree with Dobber's statement about Coyle being better two-way player... but I disagree that a lesser two-way player gets a position on the top six for this... flaw.
Nino, I think, will spend most of his time on line 3, generating offense on his own.
His other two linemates can watch his back while he takes risk scoring.
Without the "hits", I'd go Coyle.
With the "hits", I'd go Nino.
I like Coyle better but I'm worried he's stuck on the 3rd line because his style of play is more conducive to that. I'd grudglingly go with Nino
Agree with this, there's a reason that Coyle played almost 18 mins per game during the playoffs last year, and Nino 3 mins less. I see Coyle as a great complement to Parise and Koivu, he was a beast in the corners during the playoffs. That said it'll be a very healthy dogfight during training camp between Nino and Coyle which should motivate them both, and Nino could conceivably win out.
