    Default {re-signing} Jake Gardiner

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=458259

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed restricted free agent defenceman Jake Gardiner to a five-year contract on Tuesday.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the deal is worth $20.25 million with an average annual value of $4.05 million per season.

The 24-year-old defenceman scored 10 goals and 11 assists in 80 games with the Maple Leafs in 2013-14. He is coming off the final year of a three-year entry-level deal he signed prior to the 2011-12 season worth an average annual value of $1.117 million including performance bonuses.

Gardiner was drafted in the first round (17th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks.

He was acquired by the Leafs along with Joffrey Lupul in exchange for Francois Beauchemin. In 167 career games, Gardiner has scored 17 goals and added 48 assists.

He won a gold medal as a member of the American team at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship and was also named a member of the NHL's All-Rookie Team in 2011-12.

Very interesting deal! Selfishly I am curious how his contract may effect Schultz' contract negotiations.

    Keeper League - Forwards Discussion

A re-signing thread about Jake Gardiner. Sounds about right haha, you're slipping Axeman!

Interesting deal for Gardiner, I didn't actually expect this much commitment from the Leafs. But a 4 million cap hit is pretty solid for what he brings to the team....now they just need to start actually using him.

Wasn't he asking for something in the $4M range?

Not sure what took so long then, if they ended up giving him what he asked for...

    shocking on so many levels

I'm very surprised they offered him that much money and term

if I'm Franson, I'm offended beyond explanation

On another note, I guess the Leafs feel Gardiner is comparable to McDonagh? I wonder what this means for the Oilers and Schultz. I gotta believe that this sets the bar for those negotiations.

    Great deal.

    Love me some Gardiner.

I would have loved a longer term but 5 years is good too.

They're making it quite tight to the cap limit. Just $360,000 left in cap space. They're screwed if they get a couple of minor injuries. They also have just six dmen on their roster, so they need to have a seventh on their roster at some point.

Writer of the weekly Top 10 column.

Top 8 forwards, 5 dmen and 2 goalies count.

We keep 15 players (any position) plus two rookies.

Nonis told Michael Grange that the decision to sign Gardiner long term wasn't made until about a week ago. At the start of free agency, both Chris Johntson and Freidman were expecting a bridge deal to be made.

I didn't post on the "Loiselle/Poulin out, Dubas in" thread, but there's been a clear shift in thinking that's taken action over the past week. Do I think Dubas single-handedly signed Winnik, Booth, and Gardiner? Probably not. But this has been multiple smart moves in a row, and I'm a huge fan.
