I have over paid in the past for someone I really really wanted. I think a lot of people would, especially in a free league.

I dont have a problem in it what so ever.

If their preference is for something then you need to see it like you are doing them a favour by giving them exactly what they want!

Any advantage you can find is your gain. Plus the other team will generally end up happy with the trade, leaving the door open for further transactions between you.

I'm curious who was the player? I traded high for Puemple right after his draft and paid too much and just traded him yesterday.

Absolutely. In our dynasty league I sometimes select certain players in the yearly entry draft that I know rival GMs want due to which NHL team they like. This means the player has boosted trade value.

This is a big part of the fun. Like trying to read tells at poker, it can be to your advantage and is completely legal as to the rules of the game. I keep notes as to who likes what team in real life, who is willing to move or accept prospects and who doesn't pay attention to the game today and not 1993 statistics. "Yes, I would like to draft Jagr over Tavares, didn't Pittsburgh just win the Stanley Cup?"

    D: Bouchard, McAvoy, Morrissey, Heiskanen
    G: Vasilevskiy
