I'd laugh if the Oilers got E. Kane. E. Kane is the player version of the Oilers, loads of potential, fans expect great things and everyone always thinks "This will be the year they breakout and amaze".

The oilers should follow the Penguin model and stop burning the talent they got.

The Canucks could make it if they really want to. They have something ridiculous like 14 million in cap for one hole to fill (when you assume that RFA's will be re-signed with decent raises).

Luckily, Linden isn't committed to spending to the cap so we might actually be able to go through a committed rebuild.

I think that Edmonton has the highest upside in the west, but I'd only give them a 40% shot at making it.

Winnipeg could conceivably sneak in at #8.

The penguin model is winning a lottery for the best prospect on 20 years when they were on the brink of moving to another city

The Oilers basically did the same thing as the penguins, except the Penguins had a second overall pick in their string.

Instead of getting Fleury/Malkin/Crosby in consecutive years though, they got Hall/RNH/Yak

it's different because it was an actual lottery after a season that wasn't even played, and you're talking about a generational player. Nobody will ever repeat what the penguins did unless there is another lockout.

They got Crosby for free without having to tank. This isn't bashing them or saying that's unfair as he was up for grabs for any team.

And the big thing there is Fleury, building from the net out.

Yep, Crosby was the cake and malkin the icing with no tanking, awesome for them. I just want one of the EDM kids show heart outside of hall, hope it is Schultz..

To the thread, you have Mon who I do not think will fall back much, and I really just think that Trouba and Scheifele step up as real youngsters and carry the Jets on towards a shot. I know it's not logical, but damn that would be cool to watch.

That's the macro view. The 06-07 micro view is that they had two solid D's (gonchar n whitney), few veterans (recchi n leclair), adressed their names through trades (roberts n laraque), AND crosby malkin fleury.

What have the Oilers done except bringing back Smyth? They are nowhere close to have the foundation the Pens have.

That's the model i'm referring to.
