Default Sharks throwing in the towel... FINALLY

It took over a decade of disappointing playoff runs for them to clue in, but Sharks management has finally come to the conclusion that many of us on this forum have been preaching for years - They simply don't have the DNA to be a championship team with their current leaders (I'm looking at you Thornton, Marleau and Boyle).

    Let the rebuilding begin.

So after this rebuild, Pavelski will be in his mid 30's.. Might aswell add little Joe to the list also..

Not sure " throwing in the tower" is the best thing there. They certainly need to make a move or two but still a very good and dangerous team. I hope they do not overract and go to crazy.

I thought they should have done this two years ago, which was really frustrating because I was so damn wrong - the Sharks just kept winning and there was no reason to rebuild.

Stalock will end the coming season as the starter. Mark it!

Just crazy to think of the Sharks not going into the season as a Cup contender. I don't expect this to be a 5+ year rebuild....if they are serious about moving Thornton and Marleau the return they get on those players should be a big boost to a rebuild. Then it becomes how deep are they looking to go? Niemi? Burns? Pavelski? I would say the only 100% must-keep they have right now is Couture....anyone else could be moved for the right deal if they're committing to a full rebuild.

Thornton and Marleau aren't going anywhere IMO.

    Havlat, gone, obviously.

    Niemi possibly, that's about it.

I agree with Shakedown here. They took LA to the brink and if it wasn't for some shakey goalie-play they probably win that series.

Obviously, you wouldn't pick Thornton and Marleau as anchors for your team but there is no guarantee that your rebuild even gets you as good as you are right now. I say you make a couple tweaks and give it another shot.

But if Thornton wants to come to Chicago.....

The problem is that's what they've done for the last 5 years. The small tweaks and everything haven't done the job. They started doing this back when they traded for guys like Billy Guerin, Brian Campbell, etc. It hasn't worked. So they've finally come to the conclusion that they need to set up this team differently with different leadership. Take another team in sports for an example in the same area. SF Giants. When they had Barry Bonds, they were contenders almost every year, but when they finally let the core go that they had around him and built around young guys and drafted well, they won two world series. I think they're looking for a culture change.

    SJ should move Thornton.
    I think that's a fine move.
Letting Boyle go was good too.

But that's the extend of what I'd do.
    I'd even hold Marleau.

It also started when they shipped off Clowe and Doug Murray last year at the trade deadline, they just refused to accept it. Then they over-performed and became hopeful again.
