Here's an interesting twist to this whole thing:

Rutherford is (or was) a minority owner of the Hurricanes. I'm assuming he has to relieve himself of that connection.

There is precedence of owners being forced out...

from what i've heard, shero had full control, something lemieux and company didn't like. so i'm guessing rutherford is going to be a yes man for the big boys. easiest gm job in the league right now imo, all the pieces are there, just need to find the right complementary players.

they have too much money locked up though so it's hard to find the pieces. The resolution will only come by trading a core piece.

    The roster is one thing.

What happens with Bylsma now that a new GM has been named?

I think he's as good as gone but thats just my opinion.

I find it hard to believe they weren't just going thru the motions with Pierre. It's probably intentional on the part of ownership to scare the living piss out of their fanbase so that no matter who they choose for GM, the fans will be ecstatic

PM has "thrown his hat in the ring" for every vacant GM job for the last 7+ years. He's never been considered a serious option for any GM job and never will be.

The rumor floating out there is they offered him the job but the two sides couldnt agree to the term of a deal. PM wanted 5 yrs, PIT was offering 2 so I dont think they were just going through the motion with him. It seems McGuire was pretty damn close to becoming the GM in Pittsburgh.

He was definitely seriously considered here.

This entire fiasco in Pittsburgh is among the most poorly managed I've seen in some time, I don't think they have a clue what they're doing

I would've rather had Pierre, honestly. J Rutherford is 65 years old, hasn't exactly been successful over the last several years, and I just don't get a good vibe from the whole situation. At least with Pierre you're getting someone who's relatively young, has a TON left to prove, is an incredibly brilliant scouting/draft mind (a stated area of weakness for the Penguins organization), and he's an incredibly hard working man to boot. I don't know if he's the "sexy" pick because a lot of people seem annoyed with him at times, but as far as great hockey minds go, Pierre is one of them.

Would've been nice to see how he handled a chance to GM with the big boys.

Yeah, I think what is going on here is Botterill is not quite ready. Rutherford will mentor him the next couple or few seasons and Botterill will then takeover.
