my fiance is in medicine so I had her explain it to me...basically what the condition is is when the left side of your heart is extra-muscular which occludes the normal flow of blood throughout your body... so what will happen with athletes is that when they exert themselves, heart rate increases and the blood gets pumped much faster but as soon as they stop (i.e. finish a shift and go sit on the bench) the blood will pool in their lower extremities and they effectively have a heart attack. Its a congenital defect so theres not much they can do.
Poor kid, thats a tough deal for him. The only good news is that they caught it before he had a heart attack on the ice.

Really cool story, I must say.
I found this interesting tidbit in the comments section of the article:

Since it\'s just a random comment with no source, there\'s no way to know if it\'s true, but if anyone\'s heard anything about this before, I\'d be interested to know the full story.
