Default What are some good rules to have in place for a dynasty league?

Started up my first dynasty league for next season and was just curious if there are any rules that need to be put in place for the league to run smoothly. The rosters and scoring are the first team in my sig, if that is needed. There are no salaries or contracts involved in the league.

Yeah I have that one, I should've included the rules I already thought of.

    - repyling to trades in a good time frame
    - no collusion
    - no "tanking" a season
    - stay active or inform commissioner to find replacement

Am I missing any key rules?

I also suggest having a lottery to determine 1st overall picks to avoid tanking.

Should all teams that miss playoffs (8/16) be in the lottery, or just the bottom few?

In my league, 6 of 10 make the playoffs. The bottom 4 non-playoff teams go into the lottery based on their regular season standing, and playoff teams pick in the reverse order that they finish in the playoffs. If you don't have a lottery, there will be some sort of tanking at some point.

So if I had the bottom 5 go in a lottery. Then slot in the other 3 non-playoff teams after them. Then the 8 playoff teams after that according to how they finish in playoffs. Or would it make more sense for all 8 non-playoff teams to be in the lottery?

A few things to think about...

    1) How will your league handle any potential turnover? Dispersal draft or just new owners for vacant team?
    2) Streaming of players. Have a week add set or allow unlimited add/drops
    3) Rules in place for lineup violations, illegal rosters, etc
    4) If your league has minor league players, who is eligible for pro roster and minor roster and when can you bring up / send down

    1) Owners would replace the vacant team and then we would have some sort of expansion draft if we ever do expand
    2) FA/WW transactions are limited to one per week
    3) Transactions that will make a roster illegal will always be prevented
    4) GP limits are set for skaters and goalies to be eligible for minor leagues

    Woah woah woah.

No nudity?! Why would you ever impose such a rule? I see no reason to play fantasy hockey if that rule is in there.

How else would I taunt the other teams? With words?!

    1. What does your league consider to be trade assets? Players? Draft picks? Girlfriends? First-born sons? When is trading allowed? Is there a deadline?

    2. Can your league allow conditional trades? This can help encourage activity when owners are too scared to trade someone.

    3. What are your tiebreakers? I advise having a long list of tiebreakers to avoid the unthinkable tie.

    4. Have an amendment process so other owners can propose changes to the league without feeling like it is a dictatorship. Being commissioner means being a politician.

    5. Require each owner to create a team name for their "franchise" (some from our league: Hockeyville Hookers, Stammertown Shockers, Heyymon High Flyers) A sense of imagination adds value to a league and keeps people interested even when the Sighjin Sloths haven't set their roster for three weeks. I even created logos for each of my league's teams. Leagues where teams change names every year can be confusing and lack history.

    6. HAVE A RULEBOOK. Even if no one ever reads it, it gives you something to fall back on when people complain. If they hate a rule, tell them to submit an amendment proposal and everyone can vote on it.

    7. There's many things to consider, you just have to imagine every scenario before starting. Here's my giant rulebook: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-yb...lKajlJOWs/edit

imo there is a big difference between tanking and finishing poorly because you are planning for the future

tanking is not setting rosters and leaving starters on the bench or acquiring players who aren't even playing in the NHL for your big club thus not using all of your roster spots

in other words intentionally trying to lose

but if you are picking up young players who haven't broken out quite yet looking for them to do so within the next year or two and they happen to not be as good as other players who will not help your team to me that is not tanking

personally i am not a big fan of not seeing the worst team with the best pick, but that is just me
