I know I would. Nash is never going to outperform that deal. Gagner could, which is why maybe you hang on but Nash is out.
Are Nash/Gagner worth owning anymore in the cap league in my sig?
Nash (7.8 forever) and Gagner (4.8 for a couple more years) take up a bunch of my cap room, without providing a tonne of value. I would be replacing them with Kuznetsov and probably a free agent or another farm hand, on top of any trade possibilities opened up for the cap space.
I have a rare opportunity to buy them out, and am wondering if it is worth it for either.
Another option would be to try and win with them this year, then buy them out next year when all of my players hit RFA.

What a couple of cap-space suckers...

It costs something ridiculous like 20 million to do so, but I might be able to as cap space becomes cheap to acquire at the end of the season.
I think I'll buy them both up, it's not like I can't re-add Gagner if he gets hot.

One-time $20 million, that would only affect you this year?
It affects me for the year that is just ending. I'd have to trade for the cap, but it is basically worthless this year.
Normally 2.5-3 mil is worth a first rounder, but I might be able to get 10 mil for that.

Oh wow, that is really interesting. No affect on you next year at all? I think I'd jump on that. The cap space and roster spots are valuable assets in their own right.
Buy-out. Rid yourself of that salary and get it over with.
At his absolute best, I think Nash can be worth his cap hit in fantasy leagues. In the lockout year, he was an elite player in my league (1 ppg less than Stamkos). But that was him on a 39 goal, 78 point pace. This year, he shat the bed and is a horrible player to own.
Long story short, yes if there is a way to move on, do so. 99% of the time he will not be worth that salary. Same as Gagner, although at least his 4.8 is not exactly crippling.

i think it really depends on what you can do with the cap and or roster space to be honest
Nash should be a lot better next year (35-35 300) than he was this season. Maybe you hold onto him and hope that after a strong start someone is willing to take a chance via trade? Still so much name recognition with him, wonder if there is a GM that will bite....
I once traded Henrik Lundqvist and Ilya Kovalchuk in return for Peter Budaj and Henrik Zetterberg… have lived in shame ever since.

I ended up pulling the plug. I had to trade Colton Sceviour and the 20th pick in the draft to get enough cap space.
I have a bunch of players fighting for spots. Kuznetsov will take one spot, leaving room for one redraft pick. I'll get the 4th best free agent [any NHL UFA not signed 10 days before free agency is eligible]. On top of UFAs, guys like Hornqvist, Filppula, Suter, Brassard aren't signed thanks to their contracts.
This gives me more flexibility to bid on RFA's, and gives me a chance to retain more of my RFA's next year.

Was there any opportunity to trade them for basically nothing, or would nobody want them. I have done that in the past, finding someone with cap space. Actually did it this year by taking Datysuk from someone as I had cap space, when he was injured, now I got him for playoffs - freed up a bunch of cap space for other guy and he made some moves to end up winning regular season $.
