Default Raw Rookie - Evaluate my first draft

I just entered a 16 team H2H league with the following scoring categories:
    R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG
    W, K, SV, ERA, WHIP
4 DL spots, 1 NA spot

Here's the squad, and keep in mind I didn't really know who several of my later picks were:

    C- Jon Lucroy - Mil
    1B- Anthony Rizzo - ChC
    2B- Jason Kipnis - Cle
    3B- Todd Frazier - Cin
    SS- Elvis Andrus - Tex
    OF- Mike Trout - LAA
    OF- Austin Jackson - Det
    OF- Raul Ibanez - LAA
Util- Brad Miller (2B, SS) - Sea
    Util - Matt Dominguez (3B) - Hou
    Util - James Loney (1B) - TB
    Util - Kolten Wong (2B) - StL

    SP- Adam Wainwright - StL
    SP- Hisashi Iwakuma - Sea
    SP- Matt Garza - Mil
SP - Dan Straily - Oak
SP - Archie Bradley (NA)- Ari
    RP- Greg Holland - KC
    RP- Casey Janssen - Tor
    RP- Jonathan Papelbon - Phi

Like I said I have some question marks due to my unfamiliarity with this depth of baseball. Any suggestions on where I could improve with guys who might be available on the wire in a 16 team league?

    Thanks in advance.

I really like your pitching for a 16 team league. Impressive to land 3 closers in a league that size so saves shouldn't be an issue and you still have good starters. Bats are pretty solid but you're a little light on power. Look for a Brandon Moss type player on the wire if you want to improve HR. When you're this deep it's important to watch the minor leagues for upcoming talent since the June promotions can include some real difference makers.

Thanks for the quick response, Rathinator. Yeah, I had first pick so after I grabbed Holland I noticed a CP rush so I figured I'd load up with the intentions of possibly moving one at some point down the line to address other needs.

I looked for Brandon Moss, but he was drafted. Judging by last year's numbers (not always a great indicator of success, I know), here are the best remaining HR generators:

    Mitch Moreland - Tex
    Mark Reynolds - Mil
    Justin Smoak - Sea

Other notables available from a more all-around perspective:

Gerardo Parra - OF, Ari (batting lead off before Hill and Goldschmidt...)
Zack Cozart - Cin, SS (relatively shallow position, batting last to lead into the top of the order)
    Ichiro - NYY, OF
Stephen Drew - Unsigned, but will that change?

BONUS QUESTION - I may be off base since I'm a rookie, but is having someone with a good batting average in the last two spots of the batting order a good thing runs-wise, since the meat of the order is up next?

Yeah the free agent pool seems a little thin. It could be a very good strategy to build up a lead in saves, and then trade a closer for a big bat. 2 closers in a 16 team league is still better than some of your opponents since there are only 30 mlb teams, plus you would have a cushion to begin with.

Generally a manager wouldn't bat a high BA guy at the end of the order because they would get fewer at bats each game and you want your best guys to get the most at bats. Leadoff hitters and no 2 guys are usually your best source of runs.

    Looks good - Trout helps!

Drop Kolten Wong. You don't need another 2B with Kipnis and he's probably not going to be great off the hop. My inclination would be to replace him with a known quantity. This is coming from someone who has him as my only 2B in one league

Just going to fire out a few guys that might be available that I would consider adding:

Josh Willingham - injured on and off all last year but the power is there. He had a great 2012 and a rebound could be in the cards.
Michael Morse - probably won't ever get back to his 2011 numbers, but the power is still there. Had about 13 HR in half a season last year, battling injuries.
Ryan Howard - injuries. Could rebound.
Will Venable - 20/20 last season. Probably won't repeat but might.
Nick Markakis - Not much power but should get good runs and not kill you in the batting average.
Avisail Garcia - young, power/speed combo. Will get regular at-bats at the top of the CHW lineup.
Matt Joyce - nothing spectacular but can be useful ... almost no upside though.
Junior Lake - Totally no idea how he will do, but he ripped 3HR last night and he has the "tools"... could be good but the Cubs are terrible.

ALSO, once you put Archie Bradley in your NA spot, see if Yordano Ventura is on the wire... he probably isn't but he's worth adding if available. I also might consider adding either JJ Hoover or Joaquin Benoit temporarily, as they will probably be getting SVs off the bat, but likely are not long term options. Having an SP slot empty is fine at this stage of the season.
