Default Net Trading for the Year

Discussing keeper league trading with a friend yesterday and he said he keeps track of his net yearly trades to see if he really did get ahead during the year. I thought it was a neat exercise and so I thought I'd do it for the league in my signature

    Here were the net results:

In: Tavares, Giroux, JVR, Perron, Andersen 7,7,8,8,8,8,

Out: Sedin, Voracek, Moulson, Kreider, Vrbata, Horton, Hutton, Strome, Bernier, Scrivens, Raanta 1,2,3,4,5,6,

Obviously I sabotaged my entire draft next year but I think I both upgraded my keepers and got younger in my keepers.

Tavares, Giroux and JVR are definite keepers. Perron is a likely keeper but depends on what happens in the offseason.

Very nice, I like the net result long-term for your team, you brought in 2 studs. You were obviously able to buy-low on Giroux after his early struggles, as was I, nice work! I rarely hesitate to part with draft pics to bring in stud players, by doing your homework and making shrewd choices, you can negate a lot of the damage in a lot of cases, and the quality of the player brought in more than compensates being behind the 8-ball for one year draft-wise. Giroux and Tavares are worth it.

Very nice thread, I did a similar exercise recently, more for myself, to evaluate my new team. Last year was the first year of our league and I won, but I went through a major overhaul through a series of pretty big trades, and wanted to track how it all settled out. If you're interested, here it is:

My main roster beginning of year, keepers from previous year in bold:

F: Backstrom, H. Sedin, Benn, Backes, Callahan, Semin, Brown, streaming F
D: Phaneuf, Carlson, McDonagh, Hamhuis, Gudas
    G: Lundqvist, Ward, Nabokov

After: (players I will likely keep in bold, but not set in stone. We move up to 12 keepers next season).

F: Crosby, Hall, Pacioretty, Semin, Hartnell, Callahan, Wingels, streaming F
D: Karlsson, Burns, McDonagh, Hedman, Gudas
    G: Lundqvist, Quick Mason

As you can see, a pretty drastic difference. Here's the series of trades that caused the transformation, in the order they occurred:

    1. My Backstrom and Ward for Eberle and Quick (beginning of season)
    2. My Benn, Backes, Phaneuf, Markstrom (farm), Huberdeau(farm) for Crosby and Boyle (3 weeks into the season)
    3. My H. Sedin and D. Brown for Giroux and Hall (days after the Crosby deal, Giroux's owner traded for Daniel and wanted Hank)
    4. My Eberle and Lack(farm) for Brent Burns and Scott Hartnell (deal made before Luongo trade, no idea he was getting moved)
    5. My Giroux and Dan Boyle for Erik Karlsson

Pacioretty and Mason were waiver-wire grabs, as was Hedman who I got off waivers and swapper Carlson for.

So overall in the trades, I gave up: Backstrom, Benn, Backes, Brown, Phaneuf, H. Sedin, Huberdeau (farm), Lack (farm), Markstrom
And brought back: Crosby, Quick, Hall, Karlsson, Burns, Hartnell

A pretty huge makeover to be sure, with lots of big names moving both ways. I was able to sell high on some players, and buy low on others, which really allowed me to add value to my team in the long-term. I managed to land the best forward, best dman, and shored up my goaltending. I was extremely lucky to part with Ward, Sedin, and Brown before they all spiralled downhill, which saved my season and likely future ones.

Thanks! Trade 4 is likely a slight downgrade in the long-term, but I'm pushing for a title and this was a deadline deal that gives me a much needed boost in hits, PIM, sog and man-games for the H2H play-offs, so that was why that trade was made. Gonna squeeze that last few weeks of D status for Burns and hope Hartnell keeps clicking with Giroux and racks up some hits and PIMs along the way

Starting with Richards I was able to acquire Kunitz and a 4th lol. Traded Richards for Eblerle and a 4th when Oilers were sucking (GM hates the Oilers too), then traded Eberle for Kunitz.

Got Crosby last year for Nash Datysuk Enstrom and a first.

    Trades this year:
Skinner, Green, Lehtonen, 5th for Fleury, Yandle (helped my keepers but lost a pick)
    Richards -> Eberle 4th -> Kunitz & 4th
    Couture for RNH & 2nd
    Garrison for Stepan
Gaborik for Ward and 7th (worst trade I made by far on top of drafting Gabby and Yak in top three rounds lol!)
Then I picked up Horton off wire and traded him for Gabby straight up when he got hurt again so ended up with a 7th anyways
Anderson for Miller and 10th a month before deadline
    Conditional 7th for Datsyuk

I think I came out on top this year haha, My originally drafted keepers were Malkin Crosby Couture Pietro Green now Malkin Crosby Pietro Yandle Fleury/Miller
I also traded Benn for Pietro last year so dunno I how I did there yet!

EDIT: I looked back on my draft and realized how pathetic it was lol (didn't have a first)
Gaborik, Yakupov, Anderson, Edler, Richards, Skinner, Schenn, Smith, Carlson, Lehtonen, Galchenyuck, Josi, Silfverberg, Perron. Just awful lol. Turned things around quite a bit. Only 5 left, 3 being keepers.

    My trades this year:

Pavelec for Kopitar, just before the season (thanks for pumping Pavelec's tires in your season preview, Dobber!)
Toews + Callahan FOR Brobovski + Barkov
Barkov + Couture + Brobovski FOR Getzlaf + Holtby + 1st (I loved this trade at the time but Holtby has since disspeared)
Getzlaf + Johanssen FOR Kessel + Nich (two days after acquiring Getzlaf, I never intended to keep him and had targeted Kessel at the start of the season)
    Kopitar + Schwartz FOR Giroux

So I started the season off with Toews, Couture, Pavelec, Schwartz (ww pickup) and Callahan as keepers and, through a series of moves, ended up with Kessel, Giroux, Holtby, Nichushkin and a first. I had targetted Giroux, Kessel and Holtby at the start of the season, getting Nich and a first was a nice bonus.

In, G Steve Mason, out, F Mikkel Boedker. Pulled the trade in October, when Ward and Rinne both went down long term. This allowed me to stay in it. At the time Mason wasn't really worth anything so giving up Boedker, who looked to be headed to a career year, had me thinking.. But what a difference a season makes. Mason pulled a rabbit out of his hat and remembered he was supposed to be a really good goaltender and while Boedker is still having a career year, with the emergence of Schwartz and Nyqvist, this was so worth it. Not to mention it allowed me to stay afloat early on, when everyone was still in contention. No Mason and I'm nowhere near the top.. Maybe 4th...

I will include my trades from last summer since the cap really hurt trading this season in my league.

In: P. Kane, Neal, Okposo, Nash, Iginla, C. Anderson, Bogosian, Moulson, Gudas, Whitney, Stone, B. Pouliot, Garbutt, Ott, Gaudreau, 2014 1st (top 3), 2015 1st (should be top 3)

Out: Fleury, E. Kane, Galchenyuk, Parenteau, Tarasenko, Brunner, Kucherov, Kruger, Postma, Kuemper, Boyes, R. Murphy, Mason, Havlat, Pageau, Klefbom, Tierney, Shore, Daley, Dansk, Grigorenko, Ehrhoff, Andrighetto, Bergenheim, Gelinas, A. Benoit, Carcillo, Helm, Kerdiles, lots of draft picks in the 2-4 range

So ya, lots of moves. Took myself from a fringe playoff team in 10th to staying in contention for the title all year until just recently. Losing Tavares hurt, now Kane, and my goalies were a problem all year between Mason and Anderson.

Default Re: Net Trading for the Year

I'm not including offseason trading before the draft. A little context, I was 2nd in the league last season, and finished as runner up in the playoffs. I had a pretty strong core of keepers, probably one of the best in the league. We also have a farm team of 12 players under 110 games played or 80 for goalies. They can be moved in and out of the farm system at will, so they have significant value in our league. Having the ability to move a significant rookie player like MacKinnon or Trouba from the farm team to the regular team without taking up a reserve spot is very valuable. It's a keep 10 (with 12 on the farm) in a 16 team multi-cat points based bi-weekly H2H league on fantrax. Made 5 trades this year. Usually make a lot more trades but my team was the strongest one in the league and I didn't need to fool around with it much. Plus I got some wicked waiver wire pickups early on after a slow start (2 wins, then 7 straight losses) gave me high priority (picked up Girardi and Voracek off of it). Deep roster too with 4 at each forward position, 6 dman, 2 goalies, 6 reserve spots and 12 farm team spots (that are often at least half filled wiht rookie NHLers).

1st Trade - Traded my Alfy for Yakupov when Yakupov started out terribly. Yakupov owner wanted a winger back, and I figured I could probably flip Yakupov to a rebuilding team after a few weeks (plus we had two expansion teams who could make that kind of move).

2nd Trade - About a month later I moved out Filip Forsberg, Yakupov and Justin Schutlz plus a 2015 7th round draft pick for Dustin Byfuglien and Mike Richards. Richards totally busted for me but Byfuglien is a stud in our league, especially once he gained RW status. Other team was an expansion team and wanted some high potential players in Yakupov and Schultz plus a high end farm player in Forsberg. I was moving up the standings as a top contender coming on after a slow start and didn't need to wait on Schultz and Yaks potential.

3rd Trade - My Berra for Markstrom - Other team wanted to lock up Calgary's goaltending, and with only Varlamov and Lundqvist as my goalies, I wanted to make a longer term move hoping Markstrom got some starts. Long before he was traded. Mostly a lateral move for both teams.

4th Trade - Ben Scrivens and a 2014 11th rounder for my 2014 3rd rounder and 2014 9th rounder. Other owner recently acquired Quick to go with Bobrovsky and Rinne. We have a 3 goalie limit (and 3 on the farm team) so he had no space to play Scrivens. This was a fairly cheap price for a potential starter in our league and his high save total gave me a nice third option who will still be eligible for my farm come next season.

5th trade - Traded out Mike Richards, Steve Oleksy, Kevin Connaughton, 2015 2nd rounder, 2015th 5th rounder, 2014th 11 rounder for Patric Elias and Torey Krug. Krug is hugely valuable as a top 30 dman in our league and still farm eligible. Elias helped me fix my weak LW although he won't be a keeper.

    Final tally has me trading out: Alfredsson, Yakupov, Forsberg, Schultz, Yakupov, Berra, M. Richards, Oleksy, Connaughton, 2014 3rd, 2014 9th, 2014 11th (not my own), 2015th 2nd, 2015 5th, 2015 7th

    For

Received: Byfuglien, Elias, Scrivens, Markstrom, Krug

Of the players I traded, only Forsberg and Connaughton would have been kept on my farm team, and none of the others would have been kept in any fashion. Byfuglien will be a full keeper for me, and Krug, Scrivens and Markstrom will be kept on my farm team.

I ended up finishing first overall by a fairly healthy margin, and look like the odds on favorite to win it all. Plus I didn't hurt myself too much for next year with minimal picks being given up.

Those are the results of my net trades for the season, and one offseason trade.
    - Cleaned out the cupboards of prospects and downgraded picks.
    - Solidified goaltending for now and future (I hope) which was a gigantic hole on my team
    - Made the playoffs for the first time in 3 years, after finishing just outside
    - Appear to have a team ready to compete for the next few seasons with the bulk of the players being young

In my dynasty league, which you can click the link in my signature to see my team page, I've made over 55 trades (don't judge) this season and I've kept track of all of my waiver adds/drops. I think by doing this yearly, it'll make a nice little yearbook or something I can go back and reference.

As far as net trading, I think I was able to take Nick Bonino and turn him into Jordan Eberle. That's just one example of the many net gains I've made this season by trading.

Default Re: Net Trading for the Year

This is my year for the pool in sig.

In: Miller, Del Zotto, B. Schenn
Out: Okposo, Mid Season Pick (Mason), Lucic

Trade 1: Okposo and mid season pick for Miller and Del Zotto
    Trade 2: Lucic for Schenn

I acquired Miller and Del Zotto before they were traded. I thought I was selling high on Okposo but the bastard keeps racking up the points.

Well at least I did this with good intentions.
