Large Malkin Deal (rep)

League in sig, contemplating a potential deal, curious to how close you think the value is

Evgeni Malkin, Brandon Sutter, Martin Erat, Erik Cole, Simon Despres, Ilya Bryzgalov, Cal Heeter, 2015 3rd

for

Jeff Carter, Brad Marchand, Wayne Simmonds, Cam Atkinson, Mike Smith

Am I asking too much for Malkin out of the gate? Kind of feel like I am, but I've never had him on the block, and I've never traded him away in a keeper, so not sure of the value here.

The value is really that far off?

I thought a deal like this would take my team from a playoff team to a legit contender this year. From my observation, in 20+ team leagues, team depth trumps teams with a superstar or 2 and a mediocre supporting cast (aka my current team make-up). Maybe my team's recent encounter with the injury bug has me a bit too eager to sacrifice quality for quantity, though.

You can definitely get more than that for Malkin. I don't mind the idea of moving him to increase your depth in a large league, but you need at least one Top 10 player coming back to you plus the sort of supporting cast you've asked for.

Like 4T2 said, trading Malkin to increase your depth is a good idea, but you're not increasing your depth enough. If you need to trade Malkin, you need to get an excellent return. That's not an excellent return and it's not even close.

Take away all the useless names and this trade is:

Malkin
vs
Smith, Carter, Marchand, Simmonds, Atkinson

The problem here is not the added depth but the issue with quality vs quantity. I would prefer a deal that sees 3 players come back for Malkin and have a bit more ''punch'' than the names listed.

A minimal return would be a top 10-15 goalie, a top 10-15 player and a promising young player (i.e. Smith, Getzlaf and Landeskog). Once again, this is what I consider the bare minimum, but I'm sure some may want to give you more for arguably a top 3 player.

The best deal would be 2 players in the top 10 range for Malkin (i.e. P. Kane and Giroux), but I would still prefer to keep EM.

Therefore, I would personally NOT make the deal for the 5 listed players if I were you.

no way you move Geno for that, you should be getting at least 1 top 10 guy + something like a top 20-30 guy to start the converstaion for him in a dynasty.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'll just hang onto him and work on building depth other ways.
