Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.
This is where GM's lose their tittles IMO. Grab some balls and make a move already! So many trades out there and they are all a wait and see. Get outta the captain chair and I'll get in, make a deal already. Brutal, especially on sure fire assets. C'mon, weren't they hired for that role for a purpose? This wait till the last minute thing does not win, as history shows it.

While the cup is the final goal, I think it's a bad idea to look at trades that only Stanley Cup winners have made to determine if that move was a success.
If the Sens make a move, and it helps them get to the third round of the playoffs, that's a success. They get further than they have in years, they get some extra cash for all those extra home games, and maybe a top free agent looks at their success and signs with them in the offseason.
Tampa traded for Ben Bishop last year, and while they didn't make the playoffs, it's certainly helped them this year.
