in past years, he didn't get much PP time either, and with Connor Carrick in the mix this year, he is getting even less

Personally, I think Carlson has elite offensive potential, but he is getting pushed into a defensive role because he is so good defensively and the other offensive dmen on the team can't do what he does defensively.

I bailed on him in numerous leagues (though still own him in one) for that reason.

Unfortunately With Green healthy you can expect tha his PP time remains at almost zero.

Without much PP time I'd expect more of the same, 35-40 points with 3-5 PPP.

I think Green and Ovechkin are on the ice for the entire PP. This is why Carlson is not playing on the PP.

    I expect 32-35pts.

Seems about what I was expecting for projections.
I'm skeptical to bail on him in my salary league becaust at 4M, if he ever gets an opportunity during a Green injury and runs with it making Green and his 6 mil salary expendable to the caps, he'll be gold.
However, I know he'll always hold value because of this as well and have contemplated moving him because when I'm going for the win this year, 4mil for <35 pts isn't exactly helping me out.

in past years even when Green has been out of the lineup Carlson hasn't put up high point totals. I can't say if that is because he wasn't getting enough PP time even with Green out, or if the team wasn't scoring when Green was out, or if Carlson just wasn't doing what it takes to put up points.

All I'm saying is that a lot of people feel that if not for Green, Carlson would be an offensive stud, but that isn't necessarily true.

I know he has the talent, but Doughty also has the talent and he isn't putting up 50 pt seasons any longer either. Some players are simply not able to play strong defense AND put up huge offensive numbers (like Lidstrom did his whole career).

Not that I disagree with you but do not forget that Carlson is only 23 years.

    10-11 - 37pts
    11-12 - 32pts
    12-13 - 38pts *prorated

It's not that bad for a D who's playing most of the time on the PP2.

I completely agree. Carlson's numbers have been consistent and decent by average standards. I just don't think he will put up 50+ pts because he focuses too much on the defensive side of his game. I do think that Doughty is a fair comparison in the sense that both have the potential to put up 50+ pts, but likely won't do it very often because their teams rely on them in more of a defensive role.

In LA, for example, Muzzin is getting top PP time early on this year. I think they are doing that to keep Doughty fresh for the tougher minutes.

Agree with you. I don't see Carlson put up 50+ pts in the next 3 years. It can happen but I don't see it.

he has never gotten much PP time even in past years, but he has always scored more than 30

in fact, last year he only got 5 pp points (22 total), the year before only 7 pp points (32 total), and the year before that only 6 pp points (37 total).

he may be getting virtually no PP time right now, but PP combos change all the time. Green will eventually miss games due to injury, Connor Carrick might get sent down once he plays 9 games, etc.

So who is the better option then.

Carlson with no PP time but should be a lock for 30+, on a top scoring team.

    or

Giordano who will see a fair amount PP time and is on the top pairing on a bad team.

    or

Krug who is on the #1 PP on a top team, but plays on the third pairing and could easily lose that spot on the #1 PP to guys like Siedenberg or Hamilton.

in a points-only format (if you don't care about plus/minus), I think Giordano will be the highest scorer among those three this year
