Default Last keeper - choose your poison

    Hemsky, Girordano or Spurgeon

We must protect a minimum number of points each season (and a maximum), so I have to choose between these three to round out my roster.

Points only league, as in siggy.

Which of the three would have the best chance of counting for me at season end? Ordinarilly, I would say Giordano, but I don't see Calagary scoring much at all. Is Hemsky washed up from a fantasy perspective? Has Spurgeon been overtaken by Brodin?

Interesting setup where you protect guys by the amount of points they score (or don't for that matter).

Personally, while I prefer Hemsky from those three, looking at your D situation I think Gio is the right choice here. His team will be bad but he will still get prime time minutes and will have every opportunity to produce. He will be relied on heavily this year.

Points only? I'd gamble on Hemsky. He's the only proven player here... ya, he has had a couple of bad years and he has been bitten by the injury bug far too often, but if he gets moved, he can play big minutes and put up some decent numbers IMO. At the moment, he is pretty much burried in Edmonton's depth chart and that hurts his numbers.

    His ceiling is around 60-65pts

I really do like my league setup, at least in this respect. We are must protect no more than x points and no less than y points, with the players protected occupying the position in which they finished on your team (i.e. Kane finished with the most points on my team, so if I protect him, he becomes my #1 draft pick, and I don't have a pick). It works out quite well, and rewards teams who were decimated by injuries in the following season (for example, not only do I protect Spezza for 5 points, but he is my second to last pick). Makes for a lot of strategy at draft day without bending everything we know of hockey out of shape.

    Hemsky... for the strategy.

    Here's the thing on Hemsky:
    1. He COULD play well. We all know that. He has the upside of this group. If he stinks, just replace him with another player.

    2. If he does NOT play well... he still COULD in the future. In this league, that means you may be able to keep his "discount point total" with a few other superstars. As you know, if you stash an injured 23pt Hemsky among your keepers... it allows you to keep other good players in your "Keep 375-400" (or whatever for full season).

    So... Hemsky.

Just for reference. The PP depth chart in Calgary will be

    Wideman
    Brodie
    Giordano/Cundari

I wouldn't be holding Gio expecting him to produce.

Give me Hemsky. Low risk, high reward scenario here like Pengwin said. You're keeping him at a very discounted rate, and he has the potential to score at a 65+ clip if the stars align.

Giordano is a safe option, but for the value you're expending to keep him there isn't a whole lot of additional upside.

    Hemsky for me.

    Thanks All

I was actually leaning toward Giordano as I figured he was more of a sure thing to count for points than Hemsky.

However, with so much belief out there that Hemsky could possibly bounce back to a 60 point level, I really need to reconsider.

If I want to answer this question only, I would say Giordano has the best chance to count for you.
But, Hemsky is definitly the best fantasy player of the three.

For whatever it is worth, The Hockey News predicts Spurgeon to get 32 points and Gio to get 28 points. And Hemsky to get 35.

Just picked up my copy this morning, to supplment Dobber's guide.

[Dobber has it 38 to 30, if Gio's favour. And 41 for Hemsky]

Personally, I'd roll the dice on Spurgeon. I like his upside enough to take a chance on him.
