Apparently, he's been working out pretty hard this offseason. It shows in the photo. Blake Wheeler said in an interview that Buff is going to be a big time player this season. I wonder how it will effect his game. Dare I say, he won't be as lazy in his own end? Oh, the possibilities. I'm actually intrigued by his new commitment. I think it'll do him good on the ice.

Oh Fooey!!! You people are no fun.

I have the guy on my squad and I LOVED when we got a glimpse of the Dustin BUFFETglien offseason regimen. Enjoy the summer as long as you come correct when the puck drops. I gots no problems with his numbers so far but at least this gives hope that they can be EVEN BETTER I guess.

but will being in shape necessarily translate into increased fantasy value?

Defensemen can actually play a good game with a little bit of tummy fat.
    Not an enormous deal.

We noted how out-of-shape he was last year and he did just fine.
A defenseman is very, very rarely skating at full speed.

There is an enormous difference short-stamina-shift-wise between playing forward & defense. When I'm off ice for 2 months, I'll be completely gassed by end of first period if I'm playing forward and just fine if I'm playing defense.

I don't think this will translate to very much "fantasy-wise".
As his real NHL game goes... he'll probably be a bit better defensively and give up a few less goals against.

I hear he was starving himself in anticipation of the post-hockey camp banquet/buffet.

I wish him luck. But he has shown a tendency to "fall off the wagon." Hopefully this is a lifestyle change for him.

    Here's another recent pic: https://twitter.com/BlairWizzer/stat...94509585879041

Byfuglien was already a pretty fast skater even weighing 265+, he'll be flying if he's closer to 240. Regarding Pengwin's post, I agree he'll be better defensively (better able to turn and chase wingers going past him, etc), but I also think a higher fitness level and less weight will make him that much more dominant on the breakouts.

He was out-of-shape last year and wasn't just fine. Maybe fantasy wise he was fine, but his defensive game was absolutely atrocious. There was a stretch when Byfuglien was just pure garbage-- a pylon, a tired, idle defenseman. Instead of skating back into position, he would coast like Ovechkin. Except it's much worse when defenseman do it.

This doesn't surprise me that he wants to change himself. He was embarrassed with his play last year and is on a mission to come back stronger and prove people like me wrong.

Hopefully committing himself to this will make him more reliable defensively. I want to see a crease-clearing, physical specimen. The more in-shape he is, the more stamina he'll have especially late in the game when he's on his 25th minute.

This change will more than likely make him a better defenseman.
