Default Has anybody here read "The Handmaid's Tale?"

I'm studying this novel by Margaret Atwood in my summer credit program, Canadian Literature to be exact.

I don't think I've read this kind of novel before. Very odd and unique, but its been a good read so far.

I'm up to chapter 29, has anybody else here finished this novel in its entirety?

yeah I read it in university myself (not for school, for pleasure), VERY good novel and very unique as well (even for Margaret Atwood who has done lots of different things). I think the part that hits home is that the entire scenario feels so foreign and 'out there' but the more you think about it, the more you see how easily that could happen

That's very true, thanks for the feedback.

Great book. Love dystopian stuff, and this one is more real than most.

If you enjoy that one then check out Oryx and Crake by her as well. Interesting dystopian book.

Read it at university too. Fantastic novel. There's something special about futuristic dystopian stories that just get me... 1984 is my favorite, then to complete my "holy trinity" we have Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451.

    Good books all.

The Running Man by Stephen King is pretty good too (not the movie, the book) I also really liked Clockwork Orange.

The Handmaid's Tale was part of my 'women in literature' course in university. It was the best written book on the syllabus from what I recall.

Up in the Tree is also a very solid work by Atwood.
I finished reading it tonight for probably the 20th or 30th time.
Very good cadence to that piece.

Not quite up there with 1984, Brave New World, etc., and not with the same sci fi bent as many of the cited novels, check out Never Let Me Go (both the movie and the Ishiguro novel), really interesting and the transfer to the big screen was excellent. The movie has Charlotte Rampling, one of my favorite actresses anywhere, and early career Carey Mulligan.

I'm not going to spoil the plotline...
