Hopefully he keeps his dual eligibility for one more year
Lost in the shuffle of all of today's signings is this little nugget. Or maybe I'm just slow to the party.

SAN JOSE — Brent Burns will pick up where he left off next season, staying at power forward rather than returning to his previous role as a defenseman.
The Sharks had hedged on which position Burns would play in 2013-14, but General Manager Doug Wilson said Friday that he and coach Todd McLellan want Burns back at right wing where he scored nine goals and 11 assists in 24 regular season games, then added two goals and two assists in the playoffs on a line with Joe Thornton.
"How we want to play up front -- go after people and make them defend, Burnzie just fits perfect," Wilson said. "He still will be able to play the point on the power play and we can utilize his big shot, but I think we saw how good he could be and how he could impact games at a forward."
The Sharks' depth on defense also was a factor in the decision, Wilson said.

^Important.
I've said it probably 20 times now... worth saying again.
IF Brent Burns qualifies at D next year, he will be the #2 fantasy defenseman in most leagues.
Burns is a guy that could score 55-60pts playing forward... and THAT is basically good enough to be the 2nd highest scoring defenseman in a given NHL season.
Now... for the much awaited anticipation of what fantasy sites (Yahoo!, for me) will do with him.

Well, technically if he maintains his point-position on the PP, then there should be no problems with his retaining his dual-eligibility, right?
I'm operating under that impression.

I don't think that argument holds much water. Dozens of forwards regularly play the point on a PP with 4 forwards and none of them are granted D-eligibility. If he retains D-eligibility it will be a combination of stupid providers and the potential that he could return to D at some point.

You're probably right. But I'm still operating under that impression.

How many games did he actually play as a D last year?
He probably did I'm not sure. If there was one provider to continue to give Burns D-eligibility I'm sure it would be yahoo. I'm not saying he won't get D-eligibility I'm merely saying he won't get D-eligibility because he plays the point on the PP.
IF he gets D-eligibility it will be because he was once a D-man and providers either don't update or they feel he may once again play D. This is a really unique situation in that he's the first fantasy relevant D-man I know of to transition to forward and as Pengwin pointed out if he keeps D-eligibility he'll be a top 3 fantasy D-man. Also with Buff their wasn't nearly as much upside to having a D-man with forward eligibility (you're generally going to slot him as D) as compared to a forward with D-eligibility which is HUGE.
Put it this way: In a 1 year league if Burns HAS D-eligibility he's a 3-4 round pick, if he doesn't he's 12+.

Yeah, Byfuglien still had RW eligibility this past season. I can't see them removing Burns' D eligibility this coming season - not sure how many games he played but I figure he should at least keep it one more year. Though as Byfuglien has shown, it could last longer.
