Default A look back at the Rask to Boston trade...

    http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...ukka-Rask.html

An interesting look back as Brian Costello gives his top 10 reasons why the Leafs made this deal back in the day.

My favorite is easily the #1 reason.

People crap all over the Leafs for the Kessel trade but to me in hindsight, this one is worse.

Either way, enjoy your monday morning folly!

Raycroft won the Calder, right? If I recall correctly, at the time the deal didn't seem so crazy because Raycroft still had potential and Rask was a long way from the NHL.

If the Flyers had given up a prospect goalie for Steve Mason, people likely wouldn't think it was completely insane.

In hindsight, the Raycroft/Rask deal looks horrible, but I suspect a lot of deals look horrible with some perspective.

Agreed. Raycroft was 2 years removed from a stellar year in which he won rookie of the year with very impressive stats and Rask was an unproven kid. He was only 25.

I don't get why people keep going back to the Kessel deal either. Nobody thought the Leafs would finish 29th. Nobody! If they finished 28th or better, there would be zero talk about it. It just wasn't suppose to happen, but it did, and Kessel has kept up his end of the deal.

I dont have a link to verify it but I remember reading recently that Boston would have been just as happy to receive Justin Pogge instead of Rask in that deal.

In true Leafs fashion, the only word that describes that is D'oh!

I hated this deal since day 1...

Didn't read the article but that year Pogge won gold with Canada at the WJC, and Rask was goalie of the tournament.

Yes and didn't the leafs finish in the middle of the league the year before the Kessel deal? Who would have thought they would drop to what they did after, by all accounts, improving their team with the FA signings.

The Raycroft deal was terrible - no idea how he won the awards that he did on Boston.

He's on record as saying that the Bruins would have taken either goalie, and that it was Fergie who chose to keep Pogge.

According to Chiarelli it was either Rask or Tlusty. I would trust his word over Steve Simmons.

Also, that article was written in 2007... sadly, every point drills deep.

I pretty much agree with your thinking but I can honestly say I was so disappointed with this trade the moment I read about it. I was a big Rask believer since his draft year and thought he could rival Price as the best goalie in their class.
