Default Sakic: We will draft a forward

Contrary to much speculation on these forums, it looks like Colorado is not drafting Jones.

How sexy would a Landeskog-Duchene-MacKinnon powerplay line look?

It will be interesting to see where Jones goes should the Avs pass on him.

Or this could simply be a ploy by Colorado to see if they can get one of the other top 3 teams to make them an offer to get an additional piece to their franchise.

Lets say Florida already had their mind set on MacKinnon, fully expecting Colorado to take Jones. Does Florida start re-thinking their strategy or do they look at giving Sakic and Patty Roy a call and look at shifting up a spot to get MacKinnon?

This is a smart "leak" by Colorado in my opinion. Stir the pot leading up to the draft and see if there's anything out there.

Yes, I had this exact thing in the back of my mind. This could be a way to bully a trade out of Florida/TB hahahaha

I agree. This is the perfect PR move by Colorado. Why not dangle a worm out there to see if they get any bites. No harm, no foul.

Sakic: We really want to trade out of the #1 spot and still get Jones.

Thats all this is.. He is trying to get Tampa/Florida to flinch in this situation but it is only posturing and probably won't work. Both teams know Jones makes the most sense for Colorado and the asking price to move into that #1 spot is rather high (ask the Flames). I really find it hard to believe that either of the Florida teams view MacKinnon that much higher than the who they would be able to get.

Or with the expectatiion so high that Jones would be their pick, that they need to condition their fans that it might not happen. I'm not sure this spy vs spy stuff amounts to much - I bet Florida is saying, "Yeah we knew you were taking a forward."

teams don't listen to other teams through the media. they already know what's going on. Hockey is a small world.

I don't think this is a ploy by Colorado.
I think they intend to draft a forward and I think it will be MacKinnon.

When John Elway (a HOF, Super Bowl winning QB) came to the Broncos, it didn't take long for him to lure in a HOF, Super Bowl winning QB (P.Manning) to the franchise.

When Joe Sakic (a HOF, Stanley Cup winning center) came to the Avalanche, it didn't take long for him to draft a _______________________________________.

My greater belief is that the Avalanche intend on drafting a forward, really.
And... considering the ties between Jones & Colorado... it is probably in best fairness to let Jones know that they aren't taking him. Give him some time to get over that he won't be an Av.

IMO, this one is going to be cut & dry:
Colorado keeps the pick and takes the player most in the mold of Sakic: MacKinnon.

The future of Colorado at center is MacKinnon (Sakic) + Duchene (Forsberg).
O'Reilly & Stastny will be moved. My prediction.

I agree with this and think Stastny will be moved. ROR is the perfect 3rd line center who can be bumped up in the event of injury. Stastny has become expendable within the organization IMO.

It'll probably take a while for Stastny to be moved if that is true though because there are a few similar centers available in free agency this summer. Why trade assets for Stastny when you can just sign Derek Roy, Stephen Weiss or Mike Ribeiro. A team may just flat out like Stastny more and thus do the deal but I don't see it myself.

But getting back on topic, I agree that there is a very good chance this isn't a smoke screen.
