These three have certainly faced adversity since their rookie years, when they showed promise. They all have different cap hits according to our auction system, but do any of them have more promise for fantasy relevance next year? Would you take any of these guys on (for a low price in a trade) as a project?

A lot of defencemen get locked up early. Gardiner is locked up for 4 years and was paid $1.50 this year against the cap just to sit in the minors. Appreciate the word on Franson though. I really like him and have been historically puzzled why he didn't get more ice time.

The old coach liked Gardiner and had it out for Franson, thus Gardiner was awesome last year and Franson was benched for no reason.
New coach likes Franson and hates Gardiner, thus Franson was awesome this year and Gardiner was benched.
Playoff desperation has forced coach to now play both guys, now both are awesome.

I may take heat for it.. but I like doughty.. I think when the defensive D return, Doughty takes on a more offensive role..

I would tend to challenge the Doughty selections, only by reminding everyone that he earns $4.75 - compare that to what some of the other D talents earn. In fact, Doughty will presumably be in the top 3 highest paid D-men in my league next year, since his contract was signed after his huge rookie year.
I appreciate that people are favouring Doughty, and perhaps if I can shed some deadweight salary, he will be my best option. But barring that, I am not sure I heard a loud enough response that he justifies the salary straight up.
Gardiner earns $1.50 by comparison. Franson could proabably go for $1.00 in free agency this summer.

Depending on how much he'd cost I'd look at Ehrhoff. He put up 12 points in 31 games after Ruff was fired, but nothing for the first 9 games after Rolston took over. I think that's probably the adjustment to learning a new system. So if you take out the adjustment period, that's 12 points in 22 games, which pro-rates to 45 over a full season. He's logging 25:30 per game, better than a lot of other defensemen and his PPtoi/game is pretty high too. I think he's a huge bounce back candidate for next year. You also wouldn't have to move any assets to get him, which is a big bonus.

Essentially his advanced statistics (Corsi, Fenwick close/tie, etc.) were just off the charts. He's without a doubt one of the most underrated Dmen in the entire NHL, and I would most certainly have him on my short list going into next season. If Buffalo can get even a little bit better, I see Ehrhoff having one hell of a season.
