Considering your comment in the ramblings, I'm expecting Stepan to be on the team
Looking forward to releasing this in the coming weeks.
What the Prime Cuts is:
My take on a "somewhat realistic" NHL squad. I want to shine some light on guys who have flown under the radar, as well as recognize greatperformances from high end stars.
My roster will have four forward lines, three d pairings, and two goaltenders (and a coach). I will try and slot players in the right position, so you won't see Sidney Crosby centering line three. But this team is better than most NHL teams, and there will be players who are placed below their real life roles.
That being said... guesses?

I'll be releasing it in three parts (it ends up being very long). Who centers line one? Crosby? Tavares? Toews? Who is the goalie? BOBROVSKY? Rask? Who is on the top pair? Subban? Ehrhoff? Suter? Letang?

Do you stay under the current NHL salary cap?
No chance I get 100% here but I'll toss out so omissions at the end.

Hall - Kadri - Voracek
Ladd - Ott - Gallagher
Bickell - Gordon - Hansen
Phaneuf - Subban
Brodin - Suter
Dillon - Beauchemin

Omissions: Parenteau, Cogliano, Toews, Getzlaf, Stepan, Muzzin, Timonen, Markov, Anderson
I've also bolded the guys I think are locks.

Ladd is a first liner, not a third liner
GO WINGS!
Yeah, there is some, but I'm trying my best to limit it this year!
I think Pascal Dupuis should be on the team somewhere. His all-around effectiveness needs to be recognized.

I'll give this a shot. It's very hard to pick according to lines or units as they fluxuate so much over the course of the season. I went with:
1) what I thought were the predominent positions in each teams lineup (ie:Patrick Kane being a second line RW as he is on the Hawks even though he's first line quality)
2)How the players fit as a line (picking Evander Kane over Taylor Hall as I thought he'd make a better fit with with Kadri and Pat Kane....also Zetterberg over Parise, etc. etc.)
4)How each line fits in the total team concept
3)Developing youngsters with potential without placing heavy expectations but having them be able to contribute to the team concept (as shown in the wingers in line 4 as a fast all purpose defensively sound checking line, and having Sami Vatenen as a #6D-man PP Specialist)
Zetterberg-Crosby-Ovie
E.Kane-Kadri-P.Kane
Lucic-Brassard-Simmonds
Etem-Dubinsky-Bennett
Karelsson-Weber
Shattenkirk-Markov
Seidenberg-Vatenen
Price
Emery
I forgot the coach but I would go with Bruce Boudreau. Not sure if my team matches what you were specifically looking for in this project exercise Angus, but there it is
Ovechkin Crosby P. Kane
Ladd Kadri Voracek
Marchand Nielsen Steen
Hansen Zibanejad Gallagher
Subban Suter
Markov Voynov
Franson Beauchemin
Niemi
Emery
So I tried to keep it under a cap.. hah.. 'tried' was too fun though to pick lines..
Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Ladd-Ribeiro-Ovechkin
Marchand-Kadri-Voracek
Saad-Stephan-Silfverberg
Subban-Sutter
Voynov-Souray
Franson-Muzzin
Bob
Anderson

I think Cody Eakin will be on there somewhere. And perhaps Huberdeau. Just a hunch based on some of Angus' writing.
Don't worry about the cap, that wasn't a consideration.
