Default Top Ten Goalies of All Time

I've been watching and reading about the game for just over twenty years. I have a list in my mind. I want to hear the thoughts of the guys and gals on these boards. I'm sure it has been asked and it's posted somewhere, so if there is a link, can someone forward it to me?

Would this be exclussive to the NHL or inclussive to all of hockey.
My point being that someone like Tretiak could easilly be considered for the #1 spot but ,
if it's only the NHL he , and others like him , would not be invloved in the thought process.

I'll post a list later but overall career it's hard to ignore what Brodeur has done. However if I needed a goalie in his prime for game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, I would most definitely go with Roy and not think twice about it.

Hard to compare goalies from different eras as the game has evolved so much. As great as Hall, Sawchuk, Plante and others were in the past, I'm not sure if they would excel in today's game. I've read that back in the day that the least athletic kid was always thrown in net back then ... Today that is obviously not the case.

    All of Hockey.

Would be tough to compare internationals though to the NHLers don't you think?

I hear the argument for Tretiak, but what is the measuring stick?

Hmm, I think that guy that holds most of the records may something to say about that. You know that guy in New Jersey, what's his name ...
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

Records are soooooooo skewed, they simply can't be the decisive factor for umpteen reasons.

Is it a barometer for them to be up there? Absolutely.

Does it make them the end all to be all? Absolutely not.

It's a question that simply can't be answered. And I'm a pretty big Habs fan - and I can't say with all certainty that Roy is the best. Where does Dryden fit into it?

Tretiak? Roy? Brodeur? Vezina? Hasek? Dryden? Sawchuk? Hainsworth? Hall? Chico Resch?

    There's my top 10.

    Actually, my top 9.

I agree with the others. Patrick Roy, and then everyone else.

But I do want to make a case for the most under appreciated goalie in hockey history. Bill Durnan doesn't get the love he deserves. He won the Vezina trophy as the league’s top goalie for the first four years of his his career. In his first season with the Montreal Canadiens, he posted a record of 38 wins, five losses and seven ties in 50 games — as a rookie!

In total, he played only seven seasons in the league, but won the Vezina trophy six times.

He was captain of the Habs at one point, the last goalie to do so until Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks became their captain.

He was ambidextrous. He wore special gloves that allowed him to use his stick or catch with either hand.

Durnan also set a record for the most consecutive shutouts, and the longest amount of time without letting a goal in, a record that lasted until 2004, when Brian Boucher of the Phoenix Coyotes broke it.

Yet he never gets the love he deserves on these lists.

Writer of the weekly Top 10 column.

12-team Keeper pool, straight points for forwards & dmen. Goalies get: 2 points per win, 3 per shutout, 1 point per assist & 1 point per shootout loss.

    League champ in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Top 8 forwards, 5 dmen and 2 goalies count.

We keep 15 players (any position) plus two rookies.

Forwards: Panarin, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Stamkos, Tuch, Rust, Marchessault, Pavelski, Miller, Bertuzzi, Stone, Kakko, Brown, Stankoven, Kovalenko
Defence: Hedman, Fox, Matheson, Thrun, Jiricek
Goalies: Kochetkov, Talbot, Vasilevskiy, Campbell, Schmid
