So...
I love goals. I always have. My favourite player ever is Luc Robitaille because that was his job and he did it well. Dude could put the puck over any goalie's left shoulder from a couple feet out. I didn't fully embrace Crosby as an elite talent until he started shooting (and scoring) more... Until then, I would have chosen Ovie over him every time. So I've decided to list the top ten goal scorers with their projected totals over 82 games. Congrats to the peeps who chose Ovie to take it home, these are my thoughts on the top ten goal scorers this year:
Ovechkin, 32 (55) - Smaller sample size, but I think it's safe to say that Ovie is back... at least for now. Huge credit to Adam Oates for getting him back to where he should be. I hope Ovie can go forward being one of the top offensive threats in the league for the next few years.
Stamkos, 29 (50) - I see this goal total as a disappointment. Stammer only scored 4 goals in his last 14 games. If he had continued on his original pace, he would have been good for around 35 goals (60 goals over 82 games) and blown Ovie out of the water!
Tavares, 28 (48) - Is it safe to consider Johnny T one of the elite scorers in the league and thus one of the top 5 fantasy options? I think so. His assist totals were down this year, but we're talking about goals here and Johnny delivered this year, big time!
Carter, 26 (44) - Cy Young award winner here, no contest. Nice goal total though, it'll be interesting to see what he can do over a full season next year.
Kane, 23 (40) - Nice bounce-back year for Kaner. I think the time in Europe served him well, and it would appear that he has matured a little. You never know though, he could choke out some sorority chick this summer, but for now, Kane has put himself in the conversation for top five in points-only leagues.
Toews, 23 (40) - Can we start considering this guy as an elite offensive threat yet? 32 goals in 2010-11, 29 in 59 last year (40 goal pace) and tied for fifth in goal scoring this year. It's a little biased, but if I got to vote on the Hart Trophy, he'd get mine.
Tlusty, 23 (39) - What the hell? Previously most famous for posting sexy pictures on the internet, Tlusty outscores both Staal brothers, Alex Semin and Jeff Skinner? WTF?! His previous high was 17 in 79 games!
Kunitz, 22 (38) - Rob Brown. Kevin Stevens. Chris Kunitz. This guy had two goals over 12 games once Crosby got hurt. He's probably safe for 22 goals again though, over 82 games.
Voracek, 22 (38) - I didn't see this one coming. I figured Voracek was barely a 20-goal scorer over a full season, but then he pulls the equivalent of 38 goals this year? Is it all Giroux? I don't think so, but he helps.
Nash, 21 (44) - Nash forgot to tell his Rangers teammates that the season started... He's been a good-to-great goal scoring threat for years and decided to keep that up this year.
10th year Keeper League, Fantrax
14 teams, H2H, keep 10, daily starts
G (3), A (2), +/- (1), PIM (0.1), PPP (1), FOW (0.1), FOL (-0.1), BLK (0.5), HAT (3), W (5), SO (3), SV (0.1), GA (-0.5)
C (3) - Schmaltz (LW, RW), Mercer (RW), Norris (IR), Domi (LW), T. Johnson (RW), Nosek (LW)
LW (3) - Keller (RW), Hagel, McCann (C), Zacha (LW), Kubalik (RW), N. Foligno (IR)
RW (3) - Fiala (LW), Vilardi (C), Ehlers (LW), Kakko
D (4) - Theodore, Orlov, Grzelcyk, T. van Riemsdyk, Clifton, Skjei, Weegar
Util (1)
G (1) - Montembault, Allen, Halak
Great list!
Stammer's cold streak to wrap up the season was disappointing indeed... he was on pace for 60+ goals for the majority of the year.
Two other guys who I think will be perennial Rocket Richard candidates in the coming years: Tavares and Toews.
Tavares goes without saying, but Toews looked like an offensive beast during the 2nd half of this season... despite how the stats look I'd say he was even more dominant than Kaner offensively. I bet he challenges for 50 goals and 90 points next season and I'll definitely be targeting him in my drafts.
Rep given.. Nice pick!
