I typically steer clear of the horror genre, but as soon as I saw this thread Event Horizon popped into my mind. That movie just creeped me right out!

Everybody's had some really solid choices, so I'm going to list three that haven't been called yet...

    1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)
    2. Carnival Of Souls
    3. In The Mouth Of Madness

It was only a matter of time before I found this thread.

I may change my mind but here are my top three in no particular order:

    1. The Shining - saw this when I was a kid, and afterwards refused to go up the stairs and turn the corner in case I saw the two dead girls.

    2. Paranormal Activity - people have mixed reviews of this film but I loved the original. It was simple, the atmosphere slowly built and kept me on the edge of my seat. The unknown with something creepy (especially not human) has more of an effect on me. Actually have seen all four (watched the latest one yesterday) and was disappointed with three and four. I think I'm done with them. But the original is still great.

    3. The Grudge - I've never seen the American remake and I doubt I ever will. But I found the originally really creepy.

    Honourable mention: The Ring (original)

By the way, it doesn't really count as scary but if you want to watch a film that is very unsettling/disturbing, check out Martyrs. It definitely stuck with me for awhile afterwards, so although didn't keep me up at night, it had a similar effect as some scary films.

Personally, as an adult, I find horror flicks boring but I remember as a kid there were a few movies that scared the crap out of me.

    1. The Evil Dead
    2. Halloween
    3. When A Stranger Calls (the original. The remake wasnt as scary, maybe because I was older and knew what was coming).

Martyrs definitely was messed up, I agree that the impact isn't necessarily one of terror but it really stays with you.

Most of the movies that scared me have already been listed, but to list the top 3 in terms of actual made me afraid of the dark..

    1. Jaws - someone said it right already: I was afraid of my own pool for awhile
    2. Event Horizon - just freaked me out for some reason
    3. The Shining - classic haunted house psycho stuff

Love this thread... it's always hard to know which movies are honest-to-goodness solid films until several people back them.

I'll have to put Changeling & the original Paranormal Activity on my list.
    I haven't seen either.

As a kid, the two most traumatic movies for me were:

    1) JAWS - I didn't have the balls to bathe in a tub for weeks...
    2) Friday the 13th - Just cause he looked really scary

Of the more modern movies, I'd say Sixth Sense was pretty gripping.

It's hard to say because most the movies that scared the shit out of me was when I was young.

Nightmare on Elm Street - watched a few of these when I was young and they scared the shit out of me. Today they're more funny than scary but still love them.

Gothika - Saw this in theaters and I dunno why but it scared the living shit out of me and my sister. Watched it again at home when it came out on DVD and wasn't scary at all.

    Couples Honorables/Notes:

The Shining - still haven't brought myself to watch this but really want to.
Sinister - not a scary movie really, but man if you go watch it... there's some disturbing shit in there
Paranormal Activity - the first one was pretty well done, especially with the sound effects. The future ones were less effective because they used the same methods and the newest one was just terrible.
