SAVAGES... looking very strong and up to 101.5pts, establishes himself as the new favourite. From Russia with 'ov has fallen to 2nd place at 97pts. 3rd-12th are all still in the running from 92pts-75pts. A very tight league.
Wow, looks like it could go down to the wire.

I'd trade my shot at winning for a 3-week vacation. I think I've had one week of vacation in the last two+ years.
New Zealand has always been high on my 'places to visit' list. Came close several years ago when I was thinking of getting a working holiday visa. Situation changed and it didn't happen. One day (hopefully), but it'll be awhile yet.

Today, my team (From Russia with 'ov) was down to 94.0pts. (8pts back)
I've done a sensational job of finding my own way back to the pack

    Feb 09: 119.0pts
    Feb 14: 114.5pts
    Feb 27: 108.0pts
    Mar 06: 104.0pts
    Mar 15: 101.0pts
    Mar 22: 94.0pts

    This is called... a melt-down.

Standings got TIGHT-TIGHT-TIGHT in the Smythe over the last month.
It appears that as many as 9 teams are still close enough to strike for a shot at the championship.

Standings after 10 weeks [Week 5 POS & Pts] (with top 6 rounds of draft picks):

1-99.0pts [7-85.0pts] Savages (Ovechkin, Fleury, Weber, Benn, Crawford, Iginla)
    ...
2-95.0pts [4-96.0pts] Blades of Steel (Tavares, Seguin, Price, Kessel, MaxPac, Edler, Brodeur)
3-91.5pts [6-88.0pts] Nickel City (Lundqvist, Letang, Lehtonen, Hall, Getzlaf, Campbell)
4-91.0pts [2-98.5pts] PopCultureReference (Crosby, Miller, Luongo, Toews, Ryan, Giordano)
5-90.0pts [14-44.5pts] SuluShattenkirksFace (Perry, Hartnell, Howard, Kopitar, Holtby, Couture, Vanek)
6-86.0pts [1-107.5pts] From Russia with 'ov (Malkin, Bryz, Parise, Varlamov, Gaborik, Green)
7-85.0pts [2-98.5pts] Rougie (Quick, Chara, E.Staal, Anderson, Callahan, Kane)
8-84.5pts [5-93.5pts] AxeHoles (Rask, Byfuglien, Nash, Hiller, Boyle, Kane)
9-82.5pts [9-80.5pts] Goatlenders (Giroux, Kovalchuk, Halak, N.Backstrom, Spezza, Marleau)
    ...
10-76.0pts [12-68.0pts] Prognosis Negative (Sharp, Landeskog, Pietrangelo, Niemi, Hossa, Simmonds)
    11-75.5pts [7-85.0pts] Hawkdog7mm (Rinne, D.Sedin, H.Sedin, Lindback, MSL, B.Marchand)
    12-75.0pts [10-78.0pts] Bearflaggers (M.Smith, Karlsson, D.Brown, Kipper, Datsyuk, Shattenkirk)
13-73.5pts [13-60.0pts] Fantômas (Stamkos, Schneider, Lucic, Pavelec, Eberle, B.Richards)
    ...
14-59.0pts [11-76.5pts] Scurvy (Neal, Backes, Phaneuf, Subban, Dubnyk, Elliott)
    ...
15-36.5pts [15] That Bird Team (Nc.Backstrom, Ward, Doughty, Pavelski, Zetterberg, Ott)

Big Riser: Savages. Took over first place and hasn't looked back. League leader in Assists, W, GAA. And Iginla to the PENS! Rich get richer. The frontrunner.
Big Faller: From Russia with 'ov. 1st Place for over 2 months and then they hit a wall. Malkin out for 5 weeks. Green out 4 weeks. Gaborik sputtering. Terrible goalie combo in Bryz/Varly. Last in +/- , 2nd last in GAA.

Wow, that's a crazy tight league.

That's tough luck with your squad. The positive is that there's still a month to bounce back, but of course tough with injuries and slumps.

    I'll update the Adams soon.

Good pickup on Johansson ... I missed out on him by a few $. Hope you enjoy Myers Axehole, drove me insane for way too long and held out hope he'd rebound.

Also for everybody that reads this need a Dman. Send me offers to see if we can work something out.

At least you and b0ndon feel my pain.

    Bryz + Varly:
Getting 2/15 points in GAA, and
    getting 5/15 point in Wins.
    (First, 15/15 in saves though.)

    That's really hurting.
Only 22 wins in 57 starts from those two.

And Malkin has been an absolute tease.
This is the 2nd or 3rd time where I've rostered him on Thursday night only to watch him get injured or not play during a 4-game week.
I think I would have been better off with a Karlsson-type injury... because at least then I would be able to roster a player that at least got me some stats.

Next week, I think I'll be making my first goalie change.
If Khabibulin can get a start & a win tonight vs. CBJ, I'll probably roster him (4-game week) over Varly (3-game week).

Moves in the Smythe last night:
    $22 Jokinen, Jussi (PIT)
    $11 Bergeron, Marc-Andre (CAR)
    $9 Letestu, Mark (CBJ)
    $7 Jensen, Nicklas (VAN)
    $4 Oleksy, Steve (WAS)
    $3 Despres, Simon (PIT)
    $3 Killorn, Alex (TB)
    $2 Nielsen, Frans (NYI)
    $2 Brassard, Derick (NYR)
    $1 Bernier, Jonathan (LA)
    $1 Ellerby, Keaton (LA)
    $1 Galiardi, TJ (SJ)
    $0 Kennedy, Tyler (PIT)
    $0 Greening, Colin (OTT)

I was pretty happy, with my $15 remaining budget, to snag Killorn, Brassard, and Galiardi. Most of these other players were also in my queue. F my luck, I cut both Letestu & J.Jokinen in the last week to make room for returning IR players. Both have found a good chance to excel.

As standings go, effin Savages turned into the Hulk over the past week.
His team is up to 108pts... with a 10+pt league on 3-4 teams in the 90s.
It's looking really good for them. We all need the fantasy gods to strike an injury on Ovechkin and possibly for his goalies to get absolutely shelled.

Tough place for you - where exactly do you stand Pengwin?

One thing I seem to remember, in case the Savages pull away, is I believe second place gets one more shot next year, but third onwards are done? Can you remember if this is the case?

I'll update the Adams Division soon. Sneak peek - I'm still in a strong position. For now.

Moves in the Smythe last night:
    $3 Bachman, Richard (DAL)
    $1 McDonald, Colin (NYI)
    $1 Konopka, Zenon (MIN)
    $1 MacDonald, Joey (CGY)
    $0 Backlund, Mikael (CGY)
    $0 Allen, Jake (STL)
    $0 Bennett, Beau (PIT)

    {cricket chirp, cricket chirp}

The league has gone very quiet with only four teams participating in grabbing players last night.

104.0pts: 1st. Savages. Showing a dedicated effort to focus on PIM, grabbed Konopka. Oddly though, he got Zenon for $1, with still $39 to spare.

97.5pts: 2nd. Nickel City. Nickel City overtook FRwO this week in SAVES and then had Lehtonen go down and grabbed Jake Allen. Will it be enough to hold onto that category? He also grabbed Beau Bennett, a very nice "opportunity" addition.

96.5pts: 3rd. Blades of Steel. No moves.

92.5pts: 4th. From Russia with 'ov. With the Varly injury, FRwO was forced to get a 2nd goalie and went with JoeyMac having a 4-game week. Also added was Mikael Backlund who has been getting PP time.

89.0pts: 5th. Axeholes. Grabbed the newly promoted Bachman, who may get the nod over Bernier this week. A great move appreciated by the other contenders as Axeholes and Savages are neck-and-neck in Saves right now.

The rest of the league was silent.

Savages are actually at their lowest, most strikeable position in some time at 104pts. I'd still say they are a heavy favourite... If I was Vegas I'd say there was a 70% chance they win the season, but there are slim shots left for the rest of the top 5 that are still active.

Oh - something comical to look at today.
My team, From Russia with 'ov has fallen to last in TWO "average" categories: +/- and GAA.

The comical part is that I'm not just last... I'm WAAAY last.
1pt is 1pt... if you are going to stink, might as well not bathe any more.

In a Franchise league, I'm the Flames. Guess how bad my +/- and GAA is there?!

96.5pts: 3rd. Blades of Steel. No moves.
When I woke up this morning I realized I didn't make any moves to help my club. Wanted to shore up my D a little but was so busy this week I lost track of time. Ohh well, will have to wait until next week but could be critical in me having any chance at catching the leader.

On another note, for a guy that preaches the importance in +/- I find it very odd that you are last place in that category. Isn't that veird!!

    Ha!
Yeah... it does seem totally weird?
(But I'm flattered because it means you read my other posts).

No - it's actually not weird.

In real NHL hockey, I value the +/- more than any other statistic.
When I played growing up, I took more pride in my +/- than in any other statistic.
If I was a GM building a team, I'd probably pick my team based heavily on their relative +/- numbers.

In fantasy hockey, you build a winner by getting more "value" out of a player than what you invest. Yahoo! ranks include +/- in their scoring. So, a player like Eric Staal that was like -20 last year is going to be ranked lower. What is the chances E.Staal will be -20 this year... slim - which means that if I buy him and he's only -5, I still get good value because I got all his other statistics and a +value in +/- or +15. Same thing with a guy like Brad Marchand. He was like a +30 last year... and that's built-in to his "rank"... but if he's unlikely to repeat that score, I won't buy him because I know I can't get a better value out of Marchand than +30.

In summary, most of my "fantasy" hockey teams are MINUS players because I'm simply hoping that different teammates or linemates may make them not as bad as they were.
As long as they are not-as-bad as last year, then I get "value".
Unfortunately, guys like Olli Jokinen and Mark Streit were as bad, or worse, this year than even last year.

(And my goalies: Bryz & Varly, for GAA, were WAY worse this year than last year... even though I expected the PHI/COL defenses to be better. How could they be worse?! Argh. )
