Since Michalek was moved I've been trying to figure out what Shero will do to replace him. I thought that maybe bringing in a free agent like Rozsival might be a solution but i was also thinking a promotion from within might be a better solution. I think either Engelland or Niskanen could be promoted to line 2 (unless a better player is acquired). This would allow one of our defensive prospects to be promoted to the NHL full time. So the potential lines could be:

    Orpik - Letang
    Martin - Niskanen
    Engelland - Depres

    Or

    Orpik - Letang
    Martin - Engelland
    Niskanen - Despres

    What do you think?

Niskanen and Despres will assume bigger roles now. Then Bortuzzo and Strait are also promoted because they're waiver eligible now. Both have also paid their dues in the minors and are NHL-ready now.

    Orpik - Letang
    Martin - Despres
    Engelland - Niskanen
    Bortuzzo - Strait
    Lovejoy

Still one guy too many there so expect a trade. Most likely a minor one shipping Lovejoy, Bortuzzo or Strait somewhere.

Martin can mentor Despres on the second pairing since the thought of Martin-Niskanen pairing is too scary. Don't see them as a good match.

I agree, thats why I was thinking Engelland might be a better alternative on line 2. He's been pretty effective so far IMO.

Most Pen's boards have Despres - Letang. Nothing official, just HF Boards, but that seems to be the consensus of the fans.

    Could be interesting if so...

How far away is Morrow at this point. There was an article at the end of last year saying he has a shot at the team in camp this year.

I actually want to see if Lovejoy can find a spot in the final pairing. If he can learn to use his size I think he can be an effective NHLer, but not a fantasy player.

    Orpik (L) - Letang (R)
    Martin (L) - Engelland (R)
    Depres (L) - Niskanen (R)

Engelland and Niskanen will probably flip-flop in that D2/D3 right-side spot until Bylsma finds the best chemistry.

Martin was paired for the better part of the year with Zbynek... and I see Engelland as being closer to Zby than Niskanen.

    I can't see Bylsma breaking up Letang-Orpik.
Perfect combo. Beauty & the Beast.

I agree with this. Thanks for listing the handedness of each player, thats important for figuring out pairings and I wasnt sure what Despres was. I'd personally prefer to see Engelland over Niskanen but i think both would be suitable in that role. Its not ideal but there are teams worse off.

I think the Pens will give Morrow 1 more year before bringing him on. He may make it very hard for them to send him down this season but I think they will. Even after next season though i think theres a chance that he doesnt make the team right away and they send him to the AHL. Its just the way the Pens develop their prospects.

I think Lovejoy will make a solid #7 defenseman.
