Default Your prospect/farm teams and why you chose them.

Post any of your exceptional (good or bad) farm/prospect teams... Explain why you are so stacked or not so much. Do you have any specific type of prospect you go after? Long term or short term? Are prospects important to you or are they just trade chips?

    Default Prospects, why

Posted my roster and prospects below...You need to see both to understand what you need to be prospecting for...
Strategy I use is first I need to take lottery tickets when I can on potential 1st line players. These I can use in trades to get better players than I have currently. Second, I need to build replacements for my second tier players in the future. Finally, I need to know what talent is coming and having to pick and find 50 prospects requires you do that. I look for any reason to drop a prospect and replace them with another choice that just might make it.

Here's mine for the Dynasty league in my signature:

    C - Markus Granlund
    C/LW - Jonathan Huberdeau
    C - Brandon Pirri
    C - Victor Rask
    C - Jordan Schroeder
    C - Michael St. Croix
    LW - Kirill Kabanov
    LW - Magnus Paajarvi
    LW - Teemu Pulkkinen
    RW - Nikita Kucherov
    D - Nathan Beaulieu
    D - Jonathan Blum
    D - Adam Clendening
    D - Roman Josi
    D - Martin Marincin
    G - Sami Aittokallio
    G - Jonathan Bernier
    G - Magnus Hellberg
    G - Mikko Koskinen
    G - Calvin Pickard

Lost a few players to trades in the last couple years: Etem, Lack, Stepan, Lindback, Rundblad, and Couturier.

Just recently traded Eddie Lack with Derrick Brassard, Dimitri Kulilov and Evander Kane for Benn, Neal and a pick.

Traded Derek Stepan, Anders Lindback and David Rundblad for a pick that ended up being Jonathan Huberdeau.

Also traded Scott Hartnell for Jonathan Bernier to replace the goalie prospects lost in the previous two trades.

I don't feel like it is a particularly weak farm, but it is certainly not the strongest in my league. I typically try and draft one goaltender every year to have a revolving door of goalies that could make the jump in any given year. Also, I value the high end prospects so much more than middle of the road ones. Its so difficult to predict which players will do well that I would give up a lot of potential to get those high quality guys (like I did to get Huberdeau).

Dobber's 3 year window is a good guideline to go by. It helps you to try and be competitive year in and out and is a great way to keep yourself from getting wrapped up in basing a player's worth on pure potential and upside. Its a slippery slope and can bite you in the ass if you go purely off of upside (Filatov comes to mind).

As far as viewing prospects as worthy replacements or trade chips...its gotta be both. Use them to make your team better in any way you can - some are worth holding onto until they break out, others to help you acquire pieces that will get you there sooner. Best advice I can give is not to become too attached to any specific player in a way that would prevent you from making smart moves with your roster.

Hope it helps! Looking forward to reading other responses.

50 prospect limit per team, forwards and defense graduate at 70 games, goalies at 45. It's a deep 20 team league.....30 players on active roster, and 50 prospects like mentioned....so roughly 1,500-1,600 players owned in my league. I like the high end talent I've put together, plus I have some sleeper types I'm holding onto and hoping.

My prospect pool is definitely one of the best in the league, really only one other team I can think of that might have me beat. I also own 5 of the top 9 picks in the 2012 draft and as of right now I'm leading the way for the 1st overall....at the very worst I'll pick up 2 of Yakupov, Grigorenko, Galchenyuk, and Forsberg but I can potentially grab 3 of them depending on how my picks turn out.

I'll be making some moves this summer to upgrade my prospects by moving some extras out. I have 13 picks in this draft so I'll need to cut roughly 10 prospects before next season starts....gunning for Hamilton, Huberdeau, and Hackett right now, if those don't work I have others in mind.

My active roster is in my signature so you can see what that looks like....explains why I'm a little thin with goalie prospects and why I've stacked up so much on forwards.

ASKL-10 team league. Mainly points only but also some minor points for PIM, hits, +/-.

I mainly pick the prospects that I know the most about. I look for steals, like getting Silfverberg 93rd overall and Bartschi 49th overall. I stick to the guys I am already going to follow for the most part.

I used the Dobber Fantasy Prospect Report primarily to draft my prospects.

Since it was a brand new league, I drafted the first 12 rounds for my first team and then I drafted a lot of prospects, before I filled the rest of my first team...needless to say I did not finish high the first season, but I am confident I will be competitive from next season and beyond. It is a 24-team league with a 23-player roster and max. 60 minors.

Behind the player's name I mentioned HF's grade and between "()" I mentioned Dobber's Prospect Top 215 rank.

I'm in several 16-teams leagues that hold 10 prospects spots (I have two teams listed below). My prospect phylosophy is quite simple actually - use them as trade bait to help me win now. This phylosophy has helped me be competitive in all of my leagues. However it means I have one of the worst core group of prospects in the entire league, but that's fine with me as long as I remain competitve.

With this strategy I tend to trade all of my draft picks for upcoming drafts. I do this as I'm obviously able to better my team this year and my thoughts are that if we can only hold 10 prospect spots and we have 2-3 rounds in the upcoming draft that means another 60-90 prospects are going to held...then those teams have to drop their "lower-end prospects" and they are ripe for the picking.

With that in mind I've been able to pick up some rather decent prospects along the way such as Henrique, Shaw, Bishop, etc.

I look for guys that will have an immediate impact so that I can quickly flip them in trades before their "hot streaks" die down.

This has helped me a lot in past trades. I always look forward to the week after the NHL draft because that's when my hunt for prospects begins...lol...

The other note on my leagues is that we only have until they play 50 NHL games before we have to activate them. So it's really hard to determine whether or not a prospect is going to be a good player or not in that time frame (ie look at guys like Kadri - he's right at that mark and it's really hard to determine if he's going to pan out as a top-6 in TOR or not). That's also part of the reason I follow this strategy.

You'll notice on my team I do try to keep one or two really good prospects (Schwartz, Zibanejad, Allan, etc) for eventual replacements of my lower-end players but I'd gladly move them for a good roster improvement right now.

    Scoring structure: (F : 1pt G / 1pt A / 0.15pts SOG / 0.15pts Hits / 0.15pts BlkS), (G : 5 pts W / 3 pts SO / 0.01 pts Saves)

    Forwards : Ovechkin ($43), Kessel ($20), Benn ($7), Spezza ($13), Brown ($7), Marchand ($13), Landeskog ($3), Elias ($1), Plekanec ($1),

I've also got the 1st and 5th overall picks in the upcoming entry draft, so my future is looking pretty bright. Generally I just worry about going after the highest ceiling prospects that are available. I figure I'd rather have one out of every 20 or so prospects turn into a legitimate top line player instead of having 10 out of every 20 turning into a respectable third line type guy I can probably just add off the wire. I also like to keep a few guys that are farm eligible but also in the NHL on my team so I can rotate them in and out of my active roster and work around the league's add cap (farm promotions don't count as an add).

    The Great One

    Default

In my main keeper league, my only prospect is E. Lack.

I've won the pool the last two years before coming in 2nd this year. I have picks 6,7,8 and will finally be restocking the cupboards.

For the most part, I like to trade my prospects for proven commodities.
