Haha, I'm in a similar situation. I've been stashing Mason on the bench for his last 3 games, where he's gone 2-1 with good numbers. I'm lucky in that I had a very droppable player that I could get rid of for him, and that, my goalie stats are in good shape. Just wanted him as a 3rd option for wins and shutouts.
If you need the start, and your goalie numbers are already bad, then worst case scenario is that Mason will take losing numbers and confirm the loss. In your case, I'd start him and hope for something good.
As for myself, I'm in a rotisserie daily lineup league, and I'm letting him sit for 2 more games before I even think about putting him in. Even if he plays lights out, better those stats on my bench than on my opponents' active lineup.

Ooof, that didn't turn out well. I think Niemi has single handedly made my week a nightmare. As of now I have a slim 6-4 lead..owning most of the offense cats but the special team points are close and something I don't excell at.
