Default Does it make sense to drop Varlamov?

I am currently on a bye but next week I start my playoffs. The team I will most probably face next week has only 3 goalies: Lundqvist, Biron and Schneider.

Currently I have 4 goalies: Smith, Lehtonen, Fleury and Varlamov.

Since 2 of his goalies are backups, I won't have a problem beating him there in games started. So I'm thinking, drop Varlamov out of the 4 goalies I own and pick up a forward to try to get more forward starts?

My goalie match ups next week are:
Fleury - vs WPG, vs NSH, @OTT, vs NJ (b2b)
    Smith - @DAL, vs COL, @SJ, vs STL (b2b)
Lehtonen - vs PHO, vs VAN, vs CGY
Varlamov - vs CGY, @PHO, vs VAN

Goalies don't have the best match ups but I have plenty of starts compared to him. I'm thinking, maybe start Varly against CGY then drop him for a forward, or just drop him for a forward now.

Anyway, does it make sense to drop him for a forward?

I would take the risk and play him against CGY before dropping him but dropping him in your case is a good idea, although in his last 10 he is now 8-1-1 or 8-2-0 now after beating the Sabres tonight so he is indeed a very hot goalie. He does however play against CGY, a desperate team also playing for the playoffs but CGY has a game in hand over the AVS. Hard to say but I would prolly try to play him against the Flames and dump him after for a fwd.

All my 4 goalies play on the same day. Would you rather have Varly over any of the other 4? I start two:

    MAF vs WPG
    Varly vs CGY
    Smith @ DAL
    Lehtonen vs PHO

MAF is a must start. WPG is bad on the road. It's hard to choose for the other ones. At one end you have 2 teams trying to solidify their position and on the other you have 2 teams playing for a play off spot. I might be more inclined to start Lehtonen becuz he has been electrifying as of late.I also wouldn't hesitate to recommend playing varly. 8-2-0 is just too good to not play. Won't play smith cuz he is afterall on the road.

Depending on how Smith/Varly/Lehtonen plays the rest of the week, I'll decide if I should drop Varly this week or next. We have a limit of 3 pickups a week so I need to plan it well

I definitely think you should drop him. He has less games on hand then any of the other goalies you own. With 73 games played and only 4 games left at home he has less of a chance to solidify his stats compared to

Lehtonen with 6 games left at home
Smith with 5 games left at home

Their road stats are average and almost identical but you are better off with Smith and Lehtonen even tho Varlamov has been exceptional as of late.

Jigglez has got it right. Unless there is absolutely no talent on your wire, which I doubt in 10 team league, drop Varly for some more production up front.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping to drop Varly but since I only get 3 ww pickups a week and 1 have already used one, I may have to drop Hanzal and Vrbata depending on if they are healthy or not. Both seem to be sick/hurt. If one comes back, then I will be dropping Varly.

    Thanks again!

Smith has been very inconsistent lately and PHX aren't exactly the team they were a month ago. I'd keep Varly regardless of the schedule. The kid is on fire and playing with monster swagger.

But then again...I'm an Avs fan.

:P I understand what you mean tho...I have Varlamov and I am definitely keeping him cuz he's been on a tear for a Playoff Spot. The team is playing excellent and I wouldn't dream of dropping him. I dropped Cam Ward just not too long ago and let's just say I was happier to drop a Cam Ward with a shutout over a Varlamov playing for a playoff spot.

But you gotta admit....Varlamov isn't as useful to you with less games to play as say a player forward with more games on hand to score you more points.

Well when it comes down to it, I think I can afford to drop either Smith or Varlamov. Fleury and Lehtonen are playing out of their minds right now so they are definitely staying. I will have to see how they play the rest of the week and make the move on Sunday before the week starts on Monday. Would be nice to keep both but it's the playoffs, gotta do whatever it takes to survive right? Stay alive and survive!

So, I'll make my decision to drop later in the week but my guess is that Smith may be claimed right away while Varlamov has a better chance of remaining in waivers if I need him again. We also have lots of good goalie waiver pick ups if I need goalie help the rest of the week.

Vokoun, Neuvirth, Theodore, Giguere, Nabby, the list goes on.
