Default Best strategy when to pick up a Goalie?

Hi guys. What I need advise on is when to pick up my insurance goalie for Quick. I'll give you the quick overview. We are a 12 team 12 keeper league and only start one G. The players that available for draft are Steve Mason,Crawford,Anderson,Hiller,Niemi,Vokoun, backst rom,Reimer,Lehtonen,Pavelec,Nabokov.
So before the draft even begins,204 players are already spoken for. 12 + 5 farm X 12 Owners= 204. My draft picks are really tight this year. I have a 2nd two 3rd then have to wait till the 6th rounder. All followed by 7th 8th 9th 10th and final round 11th.

At what point do i pick a G? Do i really need insurance on Quick cuz of Bernier? I still have to lock up 2 starters up front. My D is set cuz Karlsson is getting called up for good so all i need is reserves. Do I use my 2nd and two 3rds picks for forwards and D? or do I split the 3 picks into 1F 1D 1G? I wish Bernier was traded cuz this decision would be much easier.

Anyway, Sorry for the long post but I wanted everyone to understand the big picture of the draft for my team this year. Thanks in advance! Cheers

It depends if your league is "daily start" or "weekly start". Put this in your SIG.

In a "daily start" league, it is very valuable to have another goalie to rotate in so you can get as many starts as possible. Those of us on DobberHockey know that Anaheim has the most different-start nights... they play often when other teams are NOT. This makes Hiller a very valuable goalie in many leagues because he will be playing when your main goalie (Quick) is not. You also have very few goalie categories... so you have to downgrade your goalies a lot.

In a "weekly start" league, there isn't much value to having another goalie. You are going to roll with Quick every week. You won't need a back-up unless Quick gets injured. Nobody (in their right mind) is going to hold Bernier on their bench taking up a valuable roster spot when he has no value while Quick is #1. In a "weekly start", I wouldn't waste a pick on a back-up goalie. If Quick gets injured, jump to the waiver wire and grab Bernier as possible. In a "weekly start" league, teams won't (or "shouldn't") be hoarding goalies because there isn't much point.

    Summary:
If "daily start", I'd probably consider Hiller with one of your 3rd round picks.
If "weekly start", I'm not drafting another goalie. Use them all on skaters.

Unless there is a really good forward or defenseman available when you are up, I'm tempted to go after Crawford or Niemi with the 2nd rd pick or the next available pick. You need 2 starting goalies, not just because of Bernier but because of: time splitting, injuries, team scheduling, and hot streaks. Since you already picked out your forward and defense keepers, it's easier to find fillers for those positions than a good goalie starter on a strong team.

I personnaly would go for a goaler with your first pick because there's some good quality no1 available.

Foward and D are not that hard to get but if Quick get hurt ou Bernier take over (highly doubt that) , then you need a solid backup

    Peace
    12 teams keeper league (keep 6 + 1 rookie) H2H points only

Rookie = less than 23 years old and never reached 60pts for a forward / 40 pts for a D

    Start : C RW LW S D D G
    Points are : A/G = 1 pt W = 2 pts SO = 1pt

    C - Seguin Giroux Stepan
LW - Huberdeau (R) Parise Tlusty
RW - Eberle Hornqwist Hemsky Scheifele
D - Schultz Gardiner Goligoski Brodie Sekera Zidlicky
G - Fleury Crawford Raanta Greiss

Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.

you guys are great.. THanks for the fast replays! Ya the league is a weekly line up. With my 2nd rounder 18th overall I'll be able to snag a Doan Mcdonald Moulson Dubinsky Connolly type players to lock up my 8 & 9 F starters. With my Dman i have the 5 starters in Dion Weber Edler Karlsson Girodano. Most seasons I only run with 2 reserves. I'm just wondering if I can get one of them goalies in the 6th round?

Last season i did what Pengwin said. "waited till our first Fa week arrived" It worked out well but I'm still on edge cuz i thought Bernier would be in Philly by now! Bah!!
