That's because you quoted Big Ev
In all seriousness, I need to see Karlsson prove he can play defence before saying that he's capable of reaching his tremendous upside. His plus-minus was atrocious. Yes, he's young enough to correct that but I want to see himimprove there so that he can log those big minutes needed to reach his upside
Both Rundblad and Karlsson appear to be good prospects
I was quoting Big Ev, but what caught my attention was the Pierre Dorion statement regarding Karlsson that he posted (not that I don't trust what BigEV has to say!).
Everyone harps on Karlsson's plus minus from last year, which was admittedly awful, but let's keep in mind (a) he was a +1 in the final 16 games of the season (scoring 12 points in that span); and (b) it was a team issue, the vets didn't do much better, Phillips (drafted 1st overall in 1999) finished at -35, Kuba was -26, Fisher and Alfredsson were both -19 in only 55 games each, Gonchar -15. Karlsson played no 1 D minutes (23:31 on average) on one of the worst teams in the league, a team going through an upheaval, and yes he is still a little raw offensively, but things are looking up.
Anyway, I didn't pick him up for his two-way acumen, I picked him up for the one-timer PP rockets he'll be firing over the shoulders of downtrodden NHL netminders over the next 10 years!

Prospect? Karlsson appears to be a good ALL-STAR. How can you still call him a prospect?
Like I said, he's not amazing on defence but he was nowhere near -30 bad. He will never be an amazing defender, but his stickwork on D is very very good. It's just his positioning and letting guys go the outside because he is having trouble pivoting. Obviously you're gonna be a bad minus player if you play 23+ minutes per game and your team is near last in GA.
I think there should be a thread called "Plus/minus - a little context" to show that +/- is the most irrelevant stat in the league!
Big Ev,
I used the term "prospect" for Rundblad not Karlsson. My wording was poor.
On a side note, I am curious, have you ever played the game of hockey?
No I haven't (ice hockey), only a bit as a young kid.
That doesn't mean that I can't say that +/- is the most irrelevant stat in hockey, if that's the direction you were headed with that question. You don't have to have played the game to know it well (again, if that's the direction you were headed with that question...if not, nevermind).
However, the one instance where +/- is fitting if is a guy is -30 and the rest of his team is in the +, or something like that (or the opposite, where a guy is +10 and onward and everyone else is in the minus).
Rest of the time, +/- is high if you're on a good team, low if you're on a bad team...it's pretty much that simple.

+/- is the worst stat in all of professional sports.

You're partly right. But you should also add that the role a player has on a team can greatly affect his plus-minus. Playing a defensive shutdown role and not being on the ice with good offensive players can reduce the opportunity for a plus. Some players log a lot of tough minutes while others feast on other team's fourth-line scrubs.

hopefully the Senators put him in a situation where he can excel
things are starting to look up in Kanata
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
AS if this thread could not get any more detailed (awesome analysis)
But the season for Lidstrom that you mentioned (94/95) where he put up .92 per game,
he only played in 13 games, notching 12 points as seen below....
