    Default Brodeur's stats in 2011-12

In a nutshell, what do you expect from Brodeur for this upcoming season? He may be the biggest make or break goalie available.

love this!! i think they should play him all 82 games. he is a goalie who builds on playing not being sit. but yeah realistically i am going with your second prediction. i think he might surprise and do a bit better than 2.40 and have 1 or 2 more shutouts. everyone says the devils wont be better but umm parise in the mix anyone?? another year under the rookies belts? kovy getting the system down? just things to ask yourself when you evaluate the devils.

GS, W, GAA, SV%, and SO

People always look at the headline and fail to dig deeper to see what's underneath it. Let's look at Brodeur's performance last year to infer how he'll do this year. I'll present the same tired stats:
    • The Devils were dismal under John McLean, going 10-23-3 from the start of the season until December 23rd.
    • Marty's numbers up to December 23rd were 5 W in 23 starts (W% of 0.22), a SV% of 0.887 and a GAA of 3.49
    • On December 23rd, John McLean was fired.

Since John McLean was fired on December 23rd, things look a little different.
    • The Devils were good, going 27-15-3. That record, over an 82-game season, is good for 101 points in the standings
    • Marty's numbers since December 23rd were 17 W in 30 starts (W% of 0.567), a SV% of 0.920, and a GAA of 1.91. Vintage Marty!

So let's assume that the Devils won't be as good as their awesome run to end the season, and that Brodeur only plays say 60-65 games.

    GS: 60-65
    W: 31-35
    GAA: 2.25 - 2.35
    SV%: 0.920
    SO: 7

    Gee, that looks ok!

I'll take something like that, but one thing to consider is that Lemaire, who presided over the Devils second-half surge, is gone. Also, the contract status of Parise is something I'm watching closely. Also, I'm keen to see Adam Larsson sign and play significant minutes as I think he will help the team a lot. They are weakest on the blueline.

I'd love to see him hit .920 but with their blueline the way it is and without Lemaire behind the bench... I looking closer to the .915 range.

I like these numbers too... except I think the win total might be ~32.

The Eastern Conference was really beat up last year.
It was the weakest I've ever seen it.
New Jersey took big advantage of it during their phenomenal JAN/FEB/MAR run.

Almost EVERY team in the Eastern Conference will be improved this year.
In the Atlantic: PIT, NYR, NYI... all should be much stronger, healthier. PHI has goaltending!
In the Northeast: MON, BUF, TOR, OTT... all look improved. Markov is back, BUF is spending money, TOR & OTT's kids will all be a year improved.
In the Southeast: WAS & CAR both appear stronger.

Florida & Winnipeg seem like the only teams that have taken a step back.
Wins are going to be tougher in the East this year for NJ, even with Parise back.

Brodeur and the Devils are such a mystery for this year, especially with Parise not having been signed and no coach yet named.

Will they be the bottom-feeding Devils of the early season last year, or the juggernaut Devils of February/March?

Will be very interesting to see, but with Lou at the helm, I would imagine it'll be more the latter.

That said, it was kind of fun to watch their misery last year, after so many years of watching them win division championships and Cups with that boring trap game. Sorry if I am offending any Devils fans out there.

Brodeur has had .920 3 times in his long career so I dont think its likely he reaches that at age 39/40. Even with the putrid scoring these days.

Good point, that is a little high. Doubtful he'll be able to keep up last year's second-half numbers for a whole season.

Yep, but it's not reasonable to expect his first half numbers again either. All about compromise!

Like I said I expect him to be right in the .915 range.
