I'm super curious what a non-stinky Utah name would be...

I actually don't mind Outlaws, especially the sound of "Utah Outlaws". It's unique and they could have some fun with the logos. I think they'll avoid it though due to the apparent negative connotation. Several kind of boring names go away too.

I wonder if the players of Utah will have any input in this?

Swarm is a little different though as it takes more than one of something to ‘swarm’.
Mammoth would be better if they add an s.

Not too excited about any of these names either…

I think the Outlaws is a good name. Hope it's that and not some of the others being bandied about. Hive, Buzz, Powder, Canyons ... yuck.

I actually like the Yeti, but agree that's far too close to what's now associated with the Avalanche to pass muster. Would also be kind of little brothering the franchise to the Avalanche in my eyes given their geographic proximity to boot.

    35 years ago... awesome name.
    Today - ain't.gonna.happen.
[Outlaws is... basically... the people that stormed the US Capitol on Jan6. ]
[I mean... there may be some people in Utah that don't mind that... but normally you don't want a word that could rub 40%+ of the population in a bad way.]

It's been done.... 40 years ago... but it's been done...

[Jeez... I'm old... I remember the USFL. Hell - it had Doug Flutie for a while!!!]

I'm honestly surprised it's on the list.
Moreso... I wonder what percentage of the population is OK with this term.
I mean... let's just go with Pillagers or Thieves or Bandits... well... we have a minor league hockey org in Georgia called the bandits... so...

Oh man, if we're really at the point as a society where naming a team the Outlaws or the Bandits is too offensive ... yeesh. It's more cartoonish than anything.

What about the Buccaneers (Tampa Bay)? Or the Pirates (Pittsburgh)? Or, as Axe says, the Hitmen (Calgary)? What about Hurricanes -- those things kill lots and lots of people and ruin lives.

Not to mention the Rebels (University of Mississippi) or the Runnin' Rebels (University of Nevada Las Vegas)? Or the Blue Devils (Duke) or Blue Demons (DePaul University)? Or the Warriors (Golden State, University of Hawaii)? Or the Padres (San Diego)?

The point is, while I understand the pushback against cultural misappropriation and slurs in historical team names and changing them in light of social mores having developed for the better, there has to be a line somewhere.

Go with an animal. People like animals, it's easy to make it a mascot, you can support wildlife foundation charities...

    Hockey already has:
    Ducks
    Coyotes
    Bruins (Bears)
    Cats (Panthers)
    Penguins
    Sharks
    Kraken (Mythical)
And whatever that Philadelphia creature is; I think it represents the Wild, Predators, and the garbage (or river rats) in the Schuykill River.

Point is, animals make the best team names.
