Default Cap League - McAvoy for Raanta

I am at my wits end. I am in a salary cap league and have McAvoy (who is on his last year of his EL) and can trade him for Raanta. This is a points only league (and some small +/- stats). Goalies are weighted heavily and Raanta got 80+ fantasy points last year, whereas McAvoy got 40. However, he will be a 1st paring d-man for his career.

McAvoy's next contract is what worries me. I may not want to keep him if he is making 6x5 (or close) and so moving him now gives me Raanta at 4.75x3. I have Crawford as one of my goalies (usually should keep 3 goalies minimum to stay competitive) and he is a wild card with his concussion...

    My goalies are
    Allen
    Crawford
Hutton (can drop, have as option this year because he was a UFA)
    Reimer

Thoughts? Advice? I need the fantasy hockey know-it-alls!!

    Welcome to the forums!

With where you're at, most of the signs seem to point to Raanta. Better performance, more contract security, need for goalie depth with Crawford.

It's this season that Raanta's cap hurts a little more. Is that something you can easily manager without dropping the starter in Hutton?
Also wondering how many teams in your league?

    Sorry

    D-depth

    Ellis (2.5 this year!)
    Butcher (EL)
    Faulk
    McAvoy (EL)
    Dunn (EL)
Carlo (cheap fill in from the farm) (EL)

So lots of EL prospects that I can farm without cap penalty. Looking to grab a more significant d-man once this year's draft begins. However, I'm putting more $ in forwards and goalies as I believe they are better bang-for-buck

McAvoy is going to be paid heavily eventually and won't have great value for his salary at a points-only league especially with Krug on the Bruins. I would strongly consider the trade if goalies have a great value.

How do goalies earn points in this league?

It's very hard to evaluate Raanta (or Crawford, or Hutton) when we have no idea how they get points...

Considering the forwards were close to points only, I just assumed it was Ws and SOs.

trading McAvoy leaves only Ellis on your roster I have any confidence in to gain you 40+ points this season. I guess Butcher could, but I wouldn't bank on it. Value wise, Raanta will give you more points than McAvoy even if wins = 1pt and so = 2. I'd peg him for 33w 4 so - 51pts.

What D are available in the draft? and where do you draft? confidence in being able to replace McAvoy's offence will go a long way. I'm a big fan of Raanta. So I'd be tempted with you. Thing is, McAvoy is still on ELC this season, yeah he'll get paid, but he needs to improve his paltry 1.07 sog/gm average. I would put him in line for a bridge deal if those SOG totals don't drastically jump this year.

A few more things I'd like to know - 1. how many teams in your league? 2. post your whole roster please 3. Are you competing now? is this full keeper/dynasty or limited - I ask because you mention snagging a good D in the draft.

Without knowing these things, I lean towards no because you need McAvoy on D more than you need Raanta in net.

    Roster is

    C - Staal
    C - Scheif
    C - Monahan
    LW - Hall
    LW - Lando
    LW - PLD
    RW - Boeser
    RW -Wheeler
    RW - Zuccarello
    D - Ellis
    D - McAvoy
    D - Butcher
    D - Faulk
    G - Allen
    G - Crawford
    BN - G - Reimer
BN - G - Hutton* (can release as UFA)
    BN - RW/C - Gourde
    BN - D - Dunn

    Farm - Carlo
    Farm - Jost
    Farm - Crouse

All under the cap - and I was 3rd, but my point totals would have won it almost every other year - the other two guys got crazy lucky

Goalies get 2pts for a win; +2 more for SO
+0.1 per save and -1.0 per goal allowed.
So 25 shots against and 3 goals allowed, plus a win = 1.4pts that night

    A 40 save SO = 4+2+2 =8pt night
    A 10 save, 4GA = 1 - 4 = -3pts

I think Raanta is the smart play. McAvoy is the sexy play. You might be able to get a pick or pick upgrade as McAvoy's trade value should be higher than Raanta's (at least in my opinion).

I'd make the move for Raanta. Goalies get a lot of points here, and goalies who have good SV% on lots of shots especially so.

Thanks for all the advice. It's happened

    McAvoy + 4th rounder (2019)
    for
    Raanta + 3rd rounder (2019)

Hope it was the right move! Now to shore up the defense once again. Anyone have any sleeper D-men that they can advise on? Factoring in Salary?
