Kevin Labanc’s one-year extension is for $1 million even. A bit shocking honestly

Holy Shitballs. That is shocking. arguably the best value in salary cap fantasy leagues this season now.

Talk about taking a team discount.

I'd say that is 25% of his true, bridge-deal value. Somethings gotta give - each one of his teammates better buy him a Rolex and steak dinners galore to make up for this crazy discount.

That is a ridiculous contract from the player standpoint.

He had no arb rights. Betting on himself. If he scores 50 again he will be guaranteed a 5mill+ deal

That's not betting on himself. He took less than he is worth and didn't put up a fight. He could have easily signed a one-year deal for $2.5M and still "betted on himself"

Maybe. And maybe on January 2nd he signs a deal for 4 years at 24 million. Never know what happens in negotiations. What fight could he put up? It’s been reported no one contacted him for an offer sheet. He has no arb rights. His cheap contract allows for the sharks to put a better run together for the year. If he scores 50 and is pivotal in the playoffs he is setting himself up for a long term contract with a nice number

It's July 8. Training camp is in like 10 weeks. Also, on Jan 2nd he could sign the same 4/24 deal you proposed if he had held out for a better deal now. One doesn't negate the other.

Well my point on the January deal was they said to him we want you for a 5x5 but can’t do it now. Hence waiting until then.

Is it weird that he signed now? Sure.

Does this allow San Jose to be a better team this season? Yes

I think this allows him the shot to make bank on his next contract better than holding out for another 1.5 on a short term deal

The other side is he has no safety net in case he gets a major injury. Next summer his qualifying offer is (I think) $1.1M. If he had signed for more it would also bump up his QO. He's free to do what he wants but he really sacrificed a lot when he should have been able to get more. He's not the only RFA in the league and the vast majority fare better than Labanc did on their second contract. And the vast majority of them didn't just score 56 points.

According to the cap value model I was working on with Eskimo Brother a few days back Labanc is a top-25 player in the league at $1M with upside to be much more valuable if he takes a step forward.

i wouldn't be surprised if Labanc has a new agent by next summer.

Those two were coming back at whatever is left. This paves the way for Doug Wilson to make a lopsided trade where there's an issue on another team like he's done recently or at the trade deadline. All I know, is this is a steal and I hope marleau and Thornton sign to similar deals so we have room to make moves.
