Not sure what's out there or who deserves credit for initial report, but hearing Barry Trotz has informed teams he is no longer...

    interesting times in Washington

I think we should give Trotz credit for his experience. I for one think he is more than capable of working with a top player like Alex Ovechkin.

The bigger issue for me is the next GM and how he will tweak the roster because it needs to be "adjusted"
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.

Theres also rumors of Claude Noel joining him as an assistant coach. We will see I guess.

Trotz has won one playoff series in his 15-season NHL head coach career, so he'll fit right in with the losers in Washington.

I think I agree with this. The best coaches in the game are adaptable. They will look to make use of the tools they have in the cupboard. If this happens, I'm very interested to see what he can do.

Bottom line is that good coaches are good coaches because they can look at the pieces they have and design a gameplan that maximizes their strengths and minimizes the weaknesses. Trotz is a very good coach, he'll be fine and so will Ovie, you guys are making mountains out of molehills
I agree with all of this.

    2003-04 Scott Walker- 67 points
    2005-06 Paul Kariya- 85 points
    2006-07 Paul Kariya- 76 points
2007-08 JP Dumont and Jason Arnott- 72 points

Most of these guys were able to score under Trotz despite playing on a typically weak roster. Also, outside of Kariya the rest of these players weren't noted to be particularly big scorers and all had their most productive seasons points-wise playing for the Preds.

Trotz has rarely had the personnel to play a high octane offence but has prodded scoring out of the role players he's been given. I have no doubt that he'll be able to employ a system that fits the Caps and the players he has.

Trotz's Predators were actually 11th and 5th in goals per games (6th and 4th in 5v5 goals per game) when he had some offensive options, like Paul Kariya.

He's also gone on record saying that he doesn't let his style control the players and that he lets his players and the team in front of him, dictate how he coaches. Think the "defensive" idea with Trotz is overblown - when he had offensive players, like Kariya, he coached a more uptempo style. When he had current day Nashville, where the only star players were Rinne/Suter/Weber, it makes sense to coach a more defensive-oriented style.

There's some great reading on him coming to Washington, you can check it out here:
