so i just read the weirdest article about the devils being the league worst when having the extra attacker once the goalie is pulled. from the article they pointed out that this past season they only earned 2 extra points in these situations compared to their previous season of something like 9 points. if they would have had same results they would have been still out of playoffs but in the 3rd wild card spot. in short hamilton was a big driver in the season before and this year hughes was bad in these situations.

i guess the point was if this bounces back to even league average they would earn a bunch more points then now. while this is an insane stat to track it actually is a bit interesting.

I'm not sure how much Hamilton affected that stat since he's never coming on the ice if a penalty is upcoming. It's almost always JHughes. Plus, Hamilton is on the ice 1/3rd of the even strenght minutes so the majority of the time it's 6 on 5, he wouldn't be on the ice. Did they break it down further that they scored the majority of those 6 on 5 goals with Hamilton on the ice? I was getting ready to say that NJ's PP suffered without Hamilton but actually it had a higher percentage last season than the season before. I thought that Luke Hughes deferred too much to Jack and wasn't enough of a playmaker as the PPQB but the results don't bear that out. Guess the stats don't back up my relatively small sample size eye test.

I took it to mean late in the game down by one goalie pulls. In which case Hamilton would have always been on the ice.

Yup it was late game not penalties and yeah they showed that hamilton was in on a lot of the goals the previous year.

I’ll try to find it and link it. It was on instagram but will see if I can find the source

Interesting.. devils resigned daws to a 2 yr deal. Second year is one way.

This is very telling. Seems that they still have faith in him and Allen’s deal expires after this coming season.

Markstrom at 34 with 2 yrs left. Could this be the daws team after that? I assume they resign markstrom to a one year extension if he doesn’t retire that is.

Well the fun is starting… will say as a side note this is the worst week for fantasy dynasty leagues. Work all summer to build a better roster and then all the injuries start flooding in with return to camp!!! - end rant

    All injured
    Hughes - anyone’s guess for how long…
    Pesce - week to week
Nemec - saw someplace that he started skating today I think

My (way too) early, 3-game report of what I've seen from the Devils thus far:

    The GOOD:
-Timo looks like the thoroughbred everyone knew him to be in SJ. He is poised for a BIG year. If you can still buy low, do it. He could even take a draw or two for Jack which will boost value (more to come on him)
-Nico should be on Selke watch, and is going to provide sneaky value for leagues that count FOWs.
-Seamus Casey looks like the real deal. He's poised, fluid with the puck, and uses his body well for a smaller guy.
-Markstrom+Allen is the best tandem this team has had since Marty retired. I think Allen will steal a few more regular season starts than most people expect.
-Kovacevic is awesome. What was Montreal hiding up there?! I never knew much about him but wow what a strong and heady defenseman. Not much for fantasy purposes, but he's going to be a rock-solid dman that fills an exact need, and is likely going to relegate Siegenthaler to the press box when everyone is healthy.
-Keefe is a good fit. He's using the skill guys properly and creating clear roles for the bottom six (which is the best it's been in years).

    The BAD:
-Jack's shoulder is probably not 100%. 90%+, but not all the way there. He looks great and as agile as ever, but I don't think he's completely gained his strength and dexterity back from the surgery. His shot attempts would likely be higher and it doesn't look quiteee as zippy as usual. He's still a threat for 100+++ in a healthy season but I don't think we'll see the goalscoring drastically improve from previous years. He's been extra terrible at the dot too, which suggests a weak shoulder. Timo might step in to take them soon. I'm just musing here for the sake of analysis - I'm probably wrong and there's likely nothing to worry about - but could be something to watch.
-Mercer does not look good. He's been responsible for multiple goals against. He's the type of player that can really squeeze his stick when he's struggling, so if we don't see an offensive breakthrough in the next 2-3 games i think we could see him moved to the bottom six and need to take a handful of games to find his confidence. Will be a good buy low opportunity if so.
-Nemec looks surprisingly out of sorts, compared to last year, where he was poised as ever. Maybe it's just me overreacting to a small sample size. He was always so smart and crisp as a rookie. Hopefully we don't see a sophomore slump.

All in all, the Devils hype looks warranted. They should be on a short list of teams with a good chance to come out of the east if they stay healthy.
